To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have two VHF frequencies I wish to scan on my G5. Where do I set up the Scan List? I am in D5 right now, my Receiving Mode is Normal Scan, but there is nothing in the Scan List window to select. I have the two conventional frequencies entered in D2 Conventional Frequency List. Thanks for your help.

You need to first assign those two conventional frequencies to a zone/key combo
You'll then be able to pick "Normal Scan" in another zone/key and the two previously defined conventional keys will be in the drop down window for you to use in a scan list.

Create one knob position for each channel, with type "Monitor Mode", then create a third knob position of type "Normal Scan", and select the first two knob positions as its scan list.

Let me chime in as well and also thank you for your directions on how to do this. I was going to post this same question.
Does that mean that you can only scan a maximum of 7 VHF channels per zone? One channel each in knob position 1 thru 7 and knob position 8 used as the scanning knob?
Also, is it possible to put 63 separate VHF channels in the 8 zones (1 per knob position) and use the one remaining knob position in one of the zones to scan the 63 channels? Just wondering??
Also, thanks to w2lie as well.

You can include knob positions from any zone in a scan list, but there is a limit of 16 total (for each scan list).

Clarification didn't take with me.....

I have 4 vhf FD frequencies I want to scan. Do I put them into one knob position? Hate to waste 5 knob positions just to scan 4 frequencies but that's my take on the above conversation. Of course, still a new newb, still learning.

Two hours to build a MARCS IP county system from scratch for trunking, now to master conventional.

TIA

You have it correct. You must create a knob position for each individual conventional frequency. You then create a knob position for scanning and include those individual personalities into the scan list.

Conventional scanning is the same in V1.30. I don't know about V1.40.

For folks that hate wasting knob positions. I create conventional zones after my most used zones and that's where I put the monitor mode knob positions. Then my normal scan goes into whichever of my most used zones that it is appropriate. That way I don't waste knob positions in the top zones that are easier to access. I've never run out of zones. Lol

Being a total newb (one week of g5 ownership) I’m not following your statement.

I have one zone with Clermont Co. Marcs divided into two knob positions (pd and fd) and 5 more knob positions to add 4 vhf fd freqs and one scanning position. Is there a simpler means to achieve this?

You could put the 4 VHF channels in a separate zone, but put the scan knob position in zone 1. That way, you still have 5 more knob positions free in zone 1 for whatever else you need to access on a regular basis. Changing zone on-the-go is a bit of a pain, so best minimised. If the above is all you plan to monitor, it's not an issue for you, but if/when you start adding more channels, it may make more sense.
