I have an older handheld 50 channel 800mhz scanner that I've had for about 7 yrs. I'm wondering if this scanner is rendered useless since the scanner world went to "trunking" and "digital" (which I'm still trying to understand) I have scanned pretty much all the frequencies and don't seem to pick anything up. Could I actually get more use out of it other than a good doorstop?

If you have an interest in aviation, you could try a few of these general aviation airports near you:

122.900 AM Alderman Airport
122.800
123.075
120.400 Cleveland approach / departure
123.450 unofficial air-air

You can listen to railroad, airplanes and airports, ham radio, and etc.

It looks like almost everything in your county is trunktracked but you could do some scanning on the bands to see what is out there other then fire, ems, and the police bands.

You can read this RR wiki page about trunktracking:

Trunking Basics - The RadioReference Wiki

Also try getting a better antenna for it if your not picking up anything.
