Scanner ban?

I was curious if there are places you have been 'banned' or ejected because you were carrying a scanner? I know that some casino's do not allow scanners. Any other places?

Please let's keepthe thread civil and worthy of this section. I'd really like this to be informational and not necessarily worthy of the 'Tavern'. We already know that private propery is private and radio waves typically travel into 'public places'.

Typically, I don't bring radios with me except on very rare occasion. I was once at an air show and decided to bring it. I had ear buds in and was watching the planes... Next thing I know, I happen to notice a couple kids from the base watching me. Then a couple more from a different direction... Then a couple more... I thought to myself; OK, here we go. I just ignored them and figured whatever happened, happened, and there wasn't much I would be able to do about it. Then one talked on the radio a bit, and they all dispersed. I didn't get banned, but I thought there was a real good chance I was going to be.

Definitely have gotten the boot outside a local base more then a few times though. A couple times they said that they had never seen anyone using a radio to listen to aircraft there before, which I thought was pretty ridiculous, since people are there almost every day doing it. They've never used the B word though.

A mature person would use discretion and would not bring it into an environment that would draw attention .
Transit systems, railroads and airports don't take kindly to people who are intercepting their operations/communications.
IOW, if you must scan in public, use this credo from another forum I visit:

The only people who "don't take kindly" to people listening to them talk, either in person or by radio, are people who have something to hide. Stand up to them now or prepare to have your radios confiscated or legislated out of your hands by a government that seems to have more and more that it can't or won't explain to its taxpayers and electorate.

If you carry a hand held scanner in public, keep it in a pocket, or under a jacket or coat, and use I-Pod style earbuds. This is what I do when I carry a scanner, and I have never been given a second look, especially in these days of I-Pods, bluetooth headsets, etc.

I have been, at Gurnee Mills Mall by their Rent-a-cops. (461.225MHz)

Althought one time is was a Moto XTS3000 and the other a Pro-96. They will tell anyone who has a scanner to leave the mall, alto it isn't on the rules that you can't have it.

I usually tell them to go ***************, and then they leave you alone, but usually watch you on camera.

Typically most mall rent-a-cops/security will hate the fact you can listen to their 'elite' little repeater system.

heh, well, the term rent-a-cops is used loosely where I work security as well, because since we're not "rented" and actually "hired" it's kinda funny how it contradicts it.

When I work security it's using Apco25/digital, so if someone has paid enouogh to buy a digital scanner, power to them if they want to listen to us.

You might want to look in a Thesaurus, rent is a synonym for hire. So what is the contradiction?

Unfortunately most have delt with the "dorks" that the profession seems to attract. Not saying that they are all dorks in anyway. Maybe some day being called a rent-a-cop will be as cool as being a geek Something for you all to wish for, now to our wacker mobiles.

By rent I meant by per/event

By Hired, I meant as actually having it as a job, in 1 location, as opposed to being "rented" for events and things.

Alrighty then....

Anyways, it is a good idea to keep a scanner descrete in airports, that I would agree. That is not a place that I would like to bring one too anyways, unless their's a special airshow, but walking around inside with one does seem kinda suspicious.

Is there a HAM exemption? That might be a motivation.

My issue with these 'bans' is that carrying a radio is almost second nature to me. I feel 'naked' without a radio. As long as I'm listening in an earpiece and not 'ambulance chasing', I don't really see the issues with not allowing radios.

But I'm interested in hearing about folks being denied entry to places with their radio.

I think the iPod earphone is a pretty good idea. My ony complaint is that the earphone doesn't perform as well as an acoustic earpiece (ala what your local PD and newscasters typically wear). It either fall out or worse, shifts around and forces me to gradually turn up the volume.

That's typically what I'll use, it the "cia" style or whatever you'd like to call them, the clear earpieces that coil behind the ear, or the set from my iPod, which, since everyone has, fits in just great.

It's within a family business, I'm 17 now, but, obviously, I am not armed.

I take objection to your "rent-a-cops" term. I really could care less who listens when I do Security.

Don't be offended.

A good portion of the security in many towns are off-duty officers.

Instead be offended with the term Wannabee. Many low crime areas are supported by Wish-they-weres (wannabees).

Most good security persons that are not cops have a military background.

What does all that mean?

You want to be a Rent-a-Cop because you are probably a cop and if that is what you want and your a good at it do it more.

You don't want to be a wannabee because you just aren't. Wannabees are just that.

Respect the military and the values instills and the character it builds.

Ignore the last 35 seconds (give or take a 30 seconds depending on your sped reddin capabilities) of your life because I have just wasted it on meaningless giberish.

Just don't be offended. Be respected.

As far as being busted before scanning. Not yet
