Anyone else havuing this problem?? Why do my batteries (regular alkaline type) keep burning up in my PRO-93 scanner? I thought it was because I went from an A/C place to outside, the temperature might of effected it. But just the other day when I grabbed my scanner (after having it pluged in) the back felt hot.. I opened it up and there was a bunch of corrosion on the inside. The buttons on the bottom don't work so good now (ie program, light, log out). Am I not suppose to have batteries in while it is pluged in?? I am afraid to use rechargables now. I am using the black holder with reg batteries..
Thanks.

What colour is the battery holder? Black is for alkalines & yellow is for rechargables. I know using the wrong one can cause that problem.

Use rechargeable batteries all the time and then you don't have to worry about mistakingly trying to charge alkaline batteries.

I leave them in there with the BLACK HOLDER. This way when I have to move to a different room (maybe the bathroom) I can just grab it and goooooooo.
Would using too high of a charger (9volt) verus 6 volts. I have 4 batt x 1.5 = 6 volts. My charger only goes to 9 volts. It doesn't bother the scanner with out the batteries.

If you are trying to charge an alkaline battery then that is your problem right there. Buy some rechargeable batteries and the problem will go away.

Make sure that you aren't putting more voltage into the scanner then what it was intended for. Should say on the input jack to the scanner.

The AC/dc adapter. I called it a charger because itoperates the radio without the batteries. My fault.
The side of the scanner says "Pwr dc 9v". I have been using it with 6 volts tonite at work. It is running the scanner alright. I should mention the ac/dc adapter as various settings "off, 3v, 4.5v, 6v, 7.5, 9v. I got the scanner from e-bay(I know flea-bay as some call it). I couldn't afford the $ to get a brand new one. Anyway the adapter came with it. There was tape over the settings and it was set at 9v. But like stated before the batteries only add up to 6volt. Sorry about being a pain, but I don't want to burn down my house or my work place.

9 volts is correct. Maybe (it is a used unit) the battery holder is defective and applying voltage to the batteries even though it is not supposed to. Voltage IS getting to your non-rechargable batteries ether through a modified battery holder/ scanner or defect.
As a side note you must be getting your batteries for free! I could never afford that with all my battery operated stuff. Get a nice set of 1500 to 1800 mAh NI-MH batteries and you will never go back to non-recharables.

Why accept 1500 to 1800 mAH when 2500 mAH are now available? They don't cost much more, especially if you only get one set.

If that makes you happy, go for it.
I'm just trying to convince him to start using recharagables, one. And two, even if he is getting all his batteries for free and does not need rechargables it would be a good troubleshooting tool to see if charging voltage is getting to his batteries even though it is the black battery holder.
1500 and 1800 are what is mentioned in the Pro 93 manual and I did not want to confuse the issue by saying something different from the manual.

Hi Navycop:
If you are using U.S. Government batteries, don't: they aren't worth the money the Governmnet spent on them (you've read some of Murphy's laws... "Remember, your weapon was made by the lowest bidder"--substitute battery or food or anything else for weapon....) I always had folks at home send me batteries when i was deployed. If you are stateside go to Wally World and buy some Everyready 2500mah rechargeables and use those with the yellow battery box.... be sure to drain them completely once a month and they should provide a lot of service.... or go to:
http://www.thomasdistributing.us/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MH-C204F and get a MAHA C240F and chpoose the option to buy four 2300mah batteries.... don't be afraid of rechargeables.... they save a lot of trouble and should give you good service and 10 to 12 hours of listening....

Navycop,

Go to Walmart and get the 2500 maH batteries for around $11.00. Mine have lasted 24 hours or more on a single charge. I have 4-5 sets. I have never had a problem with them. They are alot cheaper than regular batteries. I still keep a black holder in both vehicles in case i forget the A/C charger.

Do they lose thier memory or can I charge them anytime??
Thanks for the infor. I hope they don't heat up.
It's the other way around. You do not want batteries that have a memory. NI-MH batteries do not have a charge memory so you can recharge them whenever. I have a 4 AA cell wall charger and I just rotate the batteries every couple of days before I go to work. I don't wait for them to fully discharge (except by accident). But's that just me. I'm sure the next message will say to cycle them every week.

So you put your 2500's in the black holder or do you put regular AA's in there? Do you keep the batteries (rechargeable or regular) in the black holder while it is pluged into the A/C charger??

I've read down the other replies and someone mentioned to check the switch in the battery compartment. This seems like the most likely source of your problem. If you are using regular Alkaline batteries and the SWITCH is set to rechargeable, then it's probably trying to charge your alkaline batteries. Double check that switch -- it's critical.
