Not to get too inside baseball, but some federal grants for radio equipment require them to be P25 capable and also multi band capable. Which means that police and fire are less likely to use DMR.

What did you decide on doing ?
Hello experts, octogenarian here. Lost my free online scanner to the Cohasset police and fire departments and am feeling bereft. Want to get one from Amazon, will just be listening to local public safety and need to watch my pennies. I see that police uses P25, don't know what that is but suspect it's relevant. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Much thanks for your collective help.

Hello ecps92,

Local to Cohasset and new to scanners. I just got the Whistler ws1065 as a birthday present and my head is spinning. Where do I start? Can you help?

Thanks, looking to find out how to program. I cannot find a step by step approach. If you have a reference that would be great.
Do you have software to program your WS1065 with (if so, which program?) or are you attempting to program manually?

I just received this scanner last evening and am trying to decide if I should purchase a software program or try to manually program a few channels. I am a complete newbie and fear this is a whole new language I am unfamiliar with.

I had one of those, but with a different name. Manual programming was not all intuitive for me and I've had a lot of programmable scanners since they first came out.

Save yourself some frustration and buy the software.

thanks for the help. We are following a Youtube channel on how to program the scanner. It appears that we have programmed a channel correctly yet when we run the scanning feature it runs without checking that channel. We will continue to trouble shoot but it does appear a bit less daunting now. Thank you for any and all advice. Greatly appreciated.

I like the GRE/Whistler bank system. Makes it a lot easier to find a channel when in manual mode. When you program just make sure you have #1 bank checked off. The MSP trunk system will be more of a challenge to program by hand.

Remember - you need to assign the entry (object) to a Scan List

This will help you program the MSP H & D Troop. Start with a new bank #3, For system use MOT 800/999. For frequencies put; 859.2875 and 859.8375, these are the trunk system control channels. For talkgroups use the wildcard at first then you will lock out the wildcard and use ID# 33968 = Station D and D-1 Norwell, ID# 34000 D-2 North Dartmouth, ID# 34032 D-3 Bourne. For Station H-1 Boston ID# 33264 and H-2 ID# 33296.
Watch the following video's and use the above info to program.
System instructions,
Talkgroups ID#,

I know it's a different scanner but it has the same programming process!
Another popular MSP talkgroup #35472 MSP STATE (Helicopters).
A useful trick when programming conventional frequencies and talkgroups is using the DUPE button. Just change the old values to the new values and your good to go!
Enjoy....

This is all incredibly helpful! I plan to spend a few hours today learning the system, so thank you for the above information. After doing some reading, it appears we need to purchase the radioreference premium subscription and download the software anyway to access the talkgroups ( which I understand now talkgroup=channel). My apologies for being so basic, definitely a learning curve. Do we need to purchase the premium subscription as well as the software? Just making sure...thanks again.

It's all helpful. But if you can get by with manual programming for now. Take one step at a time. Old school easy isn't always the first step!

Ok, great. I appreciate the talkgroup codes you listed above. I was unable to find these codes and wondering if I needed to be a premium member to find them. I will start with putting in those codes as well as the new YouTube videos sent above...thank you for your help!
