i know the first is a freq but whats the () mean . is that a second freq, a trunk, etc,

or private line.
a sub audio sound that is transmitted and it tells the receiver to break squelch when on.
kind of like a secret handshake.
some scanner can use the info and some can not.
also called ctcss.

PL

Private Line (PL) is actually a Motorola trademark. It actually is CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) and used where the same frequency is in use in adjacent areas and might interfere with each other.

yes,
and it would work like this
where i grew up, in bergen county new jersey.
the county used 155.55 (156.7)
and across the river was westchester county on
155.55 (192.8)
they could not hear each other. they used the PL thing.
but with a scanner with no PL i could hear them both.
it worked fine by me as the closer county stuff was "grabbed" by my scanner due to the capture effect.
now that i have a scanner with PL on it i could just listen to westchester, unless the closer county opens a mic and then all is lost. i would hear nothing.
