Hello all

I'd like to get my friend's son into ham radio, (I started with a scanner and CB radio) and I'd like to start him on the same. He would lose interest if pushed hard into the hobby. I have a spare Motorola SP50+ 10 channel VHF radio that I'd like to give him. Besides duluth WX, and 3 of the twin ports shipping frequencies what are some other active analog VHF frequencies could program for him as my qth is not in the Duluth area. I understand most the area went digital much like St. Cloud. If he gains more interest I might give him a baofeng UV-5R and disable the TX.

Thanks for the help

Hi Peter,

What county is he in?

That could make a BIG difference.

I'm surrounded by digital systems (need a higher end more complex scanner), but my town is still quite simple and easy to listen to with basic equipment, so it really does depend on what county.

I see some conventional frequencies that he could get right now with that radio for the local police (I think!).

The baofeng might be more fun, because they he could listen to hams as well (?).
