I am currently thinking of getting a subscription to a magazine devoted to the scanning hobby. I know of two of them already (National Communications, and Monitoring Times). Which is the best to get.

Not familiar with National Communications other than the name. I've been a subscriber to Monitoring Times since it's inception.

You can download & read a sample issue (in *.pdf format) here:
http://www.monitoringtimes.com/html/subscribe.html

Another one that has some scanner coverage is Popular Communications.

I'm not familiar with National Communications. I currently subscribe to Monitoring Times, and just signed up for Scanning USA a couple weeks ago. There is also Popular Communications.

Monitoring Times is very good, but only a portion of it is dedicated to the scanning hobby. It also covers shortwave, and other radio related interest. A good portion of it is consumed by the Shortwave Guide, 18 pages in the issue I'm looking at now. It has radio, and software reviews, info on satilite, military, federal government, utilities, etc. This is probably my favorite. The issue I'm looking at now is 92 pages! :D

Scanning USA is all about scanning, and related equipment, techniques, software, frequencies, etc. It seems to be comming back to life, and is a lot more interesting than it had been for awhile. A good friend of mine, Les Butler, writes articles for them too! I bought a few issues off the rack, and was quickly convinced to subscribe to it! The issue I'm looking at now is 66 pages. :)

Popular Communications is a mix of everything, including ham radio. Only a small portion is devoted to scanning. I've never been impressed enough to subscribe to it. Although I check it out at the stands when I see it, an usually end up buying a copy. The issue I'm looking at now is 80 pages. :?

I suscribe to Scanning USA, the ONLY magazine dedicated to scanning and only scanning.

You can suscribe online, thats what I did.

Please keep in mind this is'nt the prettiest magazine in the world, its pages besides the cover are black and white, and also not glossy. You will find typos and spelling errors, also a good chunk of this magazine every month is FCC updates for the whole country (25 of 66pages on avg.)!!! But don't let that keep you from subscribing, I didnt want to sugar coat it. There is some interesting articles in the pages, with the same columns every month (scanners in the news/ Trunked system spotlight)

I look foward to this coming in my mail box every month. 8)

I like the magazine. I think that anyone who is halfway serious about scanning should have a stack of these mags on their toilet.
