My guess is there will be a 396P2 coming soon. I read somewhere that the 396Xt and 996xt models were originally intended to handle P2 and just be a firmware update. It was testing that showed the processor couldn't keep up with the demand. with the new 996p2 out i completely understand the 996XT disappearing, its essentially the new version of the same scanner with a bigger processor. I would assume the 396XT will be the same way.

The 436HP's has a back lit keypad but just barely . Look at the photo below and compare, no photoshop tricks here. Just using Uniden parts that are readily available.

I like a lit keypad also. The 396XT is currently running under $300 on eBay. I'm thinking about picking up a second one.

Even the x36 processors can barely keep up when doing Phase 2....

Also doesn't include a real charger just a USB cable and no charging and listening. :)

Not Uniden's choice. They are adhering to a CEC standard.

As for the other differences, if you need those get the 436.

I've been checking for about a month I was going to by one from SM but it said out of stock for a month so I bought mine ebay. Then I checked today and it's gone. I can see the 996xt being phased out due to it being the same as the p2 just with p2 lol. But the 325 and the 396 are two different beasts! I prefer the 396 as the beast. I use color alerts and enjoy 12hr battery life. Lol

I know where everyone is coming from. I own a 346xt,396xt, and the 436hp (and a 125at for that matter) . I said in another thread, if the 396p2 (or whatever it may be called) came out, I would buy it in a second. I waited a year to make the purchase on a phase 2 scanner. I am not going to bash the 436 either, I really do like it for several reasons. Its just that the 396xt is probably my favorite scanner of all time. It has performed flawless for 6 years. The above post with the 346's black case-----NOW that is awesome! That was the only thing I would have ever changed on the 396, and its so minor, really. I just prefer the black case.

I use scanners from both GRE/RS, and Uniden, (see my signature line). I am not too brand loyal, if it works it works. And the 346/396xt models are true workhorses for me.

Here is a short story (again I like ALL my scanners). Two years ago my wife and I went to Destin Florida for a week (awesome place). I took the Pro106, and the 396xt to listen to all the mil-air action there (and there is a TON). Most people would assume the 106 would be absolutely an awesome mil-air scanner built for this task (I know I did), but the 396 totally surprised me. They both had Diamond rhc77a antennas, and the 396 really made the 106 look bad. I was totally shocked. All settings were as identical as I could get them. Anyway, my 2cents (which probably doesn't mean much LOL), is that a 396xtp2, or whatever you guys want to call it, would FLY off the shelves if Uniden released one. Mike

CEC is the California Energy Commission (I think that's the correct name) and they have standards that exceed any other state with respect to charging batteries such as those used in the scanners. They 'nailed' Uniden with the BC346XT and forced them to remove the charging capability (hence the BC346XTC model). But, there is an exemption for USB chargers, so Uniden added the charging capability back to the scanners using USB.

Just google CEC BC346XTC and you should find lots of reading material.

No one mentioned cancer - California's requirement is for energy usage.

CA - has / does / is trying / to ban lead statewide for ammo - think they have iin some areas - as well as lead sinkers and jigs. Don't know the specifics as you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

They also have their own rules on what handguns / firearms are legal, different than any other state.

Haha that is funny I guess they got cancer from the 6v charger. Better stop fishing and loading ammo and driving my truck...lol

What does lead ammo and a general rant about California have to do with 396xt's?

Amateur Electronic Supply has 396xt's in stock at all their locations, if you really want one.

By the way lead solder has been banned for years. So has lead based paint. Not just in California either.

The ban on lead ammo only applied to certain areas in California. However, it may be extended after July 1. They held extensive hearing to get the input of hunting groups.

That was just a example of how 1 state rules the us market. And a joke, has nothing to do with California implementation of Cec and forcing new guidelines on what can and cannot be used or produced going forward! Now back to topic.

Still can buy 60/40 and other lead solder. It's banned for copper water lines, but legal in most states for electronics.

No idea about CA.

I have enough to last me the rest of my life.
