Carry-On, too much chance of theft with checked baggage.

Never had an issue, other than a few times got the extra swab thru of the electronics

I have never flown overseas but the few times I flew i had no problem taking a scanner on the plane. I even managed to talk to the pilot at one stop, only a few on the plane and very nice pilot. I ask him if i could try to use it on the plane, he ask where i was sitting and said "OK try it. I will send someone to tell you to shut it off if i get any interference problems in the cockpit." I tried it after we were in flight and there was so much noise I could not even make the scanner squelch.

I've flown Porter and Westjet a couple times with mine. Most hassle I ever had was a person asking me to show them that it worked. It was fun listening to the TMR from above the TMR but reception wasn't that good. I could hear the aircrew talking to the ground but it was really distorted (overload maybe?) and I didn't hear anyone talking back once we whereof the ground.

Carry-On, too much chance of theft with checked baggage.

Before 9/11, I brought a scanner with me and tried to keep it pretty hidden, but at one point, a particularly effeminate Male Flight Attendant tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me. I don't even know what that is, but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be using it."

This is an absolutely true story.

I always travel with lots of suspicious looking wires and electronic devices on the X-Ray, so when I go through the scanner and I am asked, "Sir, is this your bag? Step aside." I enjoy watching them figure out exactly what I'm carrying.

That's also why I always check the Marital Aids.

I've carried them on several times (often a scanner, ham radio, and several other items) and never had any real issues. One thing though, make sure that the batteries are charged since there have been times I've been asked to turn them on so the folks could see that they were actually radios that worked. This doesn't happen often, but if you're asked and it doesn't work, they may really start to get serious about you.

Carry on. Never a problem once flying international after 9/11. Never asked to turn it on.

Definitely in your carry-on. I recently took my PSR-800 on a trip. As others have said, don't be surprised if your carry-on bag gets selected for secondary screening and swabbing after they see it on the XRay.

I am on a plane almost every week with a 106, 396xt, and an 800. Most of the time I don't even get a second glance. They are more worried about my cough syrup than my scanners. Go figure.

Somewhere in this room. Right now, you're very col
Tried listening to ATC once while flying and really couldn't pick up much. Today's modern airliners are really well shielded to prevent RF interference, which makes scanning pretty difficult.

Someone posted a wiki link - good info there. United is good if you want to listen to ATC as you fly - I love doing that. Works much better than trying to use a scanner and no flight attendants are going to give you any grief about it unlike the scanner which in today's post 9-11 world will raise some eyebrows if used in flight (I know the OP said he wasn't going to, but some folks might try).

after getting my 396 my girlfriend and myself were on a business trip. when i got to my seat in the plane a stewardess came by and asked what i had i simply said a scanner. after a short time she came back and told me that the pilot said that they were getting interference and asked if i could turn it off, i said ok and did.
my girlfriend wondered why i also pulled out a battery from it and i said for the next thing she will say. in a short while she came back to say that they are still getting the interference and maybe i forgot to turn it off, i said no and produced the battery and said impossible, not me. she said ok and went about her duties. so i told my girlfriend that was why i pulled the battery, i expected that ploy.so if we were getting interference why was the plane able to take off? you know what with all that interference and all !
i wanted to follow up with the old "omg we are still taking off" but let it go
you might want to follow that idea.

Scanner on airplane

I have traveled both in the US and internationally with a scanner and one or two ham HT's. My computer gets more attention than my radios have. The only time I had any question was in returning from Guatemala. I had a letter from their equivalent of the ARRL which cleared me immediately.
