Is it possible to send a live audio stream through my wireless network? My server machine is what the scanner is attached to. That machine resides in my bedroom. But I spend much of the day in one of the front rooms, each of which has another machine on the network. So I'm looking to find out if I can listen in from one of the front rooms as needed. I know I could send out via the web and bring it back in, but that's the long way around the racetrack. Thx.

Assuming you are on Windows, I would suggest Windows Media Encoder. Very simple, easy to setup. This doesnt exactly send out "to the web". While this is an option of the encoder, it can also act as its own server, and will only use local network bandwidth.

Just stream your scanner to the net but don't make it public and don't forward the ports of the server to make it visable outside your network. Then put the machine that hosts the stream on a static IP address outside the range of your routers DHCP server and connect to your own private server via the local IP address (ex. http://192.168.1.241:8000) and listen across your local network. You can stream this using either Winamp (Encoder) and Shoutcast (Server) or with Simplecast (Encoder) and Icecast (Server) and just need to connect the scanner to the line in of the soundcard and stream away.

Audio over wireless network

As those already stated, you can use a variety of software to accomplish this.

I choose to publish my stream to the web with Icecast/Shoutcast combo. However, I do have a wireless network setup just because I have a laptop in the mix. The server and consequently the scanner are located in my office. Because my office lacks climate control, it can be VERY cold or in excess of 100 degrees. Accordingly, I do most of my work from the laptop.

As VE3NSV stated, it is as simple as directing your media player (Windoze Mediaplayer, iTunes, Winamp, etc.) to your server computer on your lan and the port it is "broadcasting" on. This bypasses the internet and also frees up bandwidth for other internet listeners.

So, typically, I will listen over my LAN, in my air conditioned house, with my laptop. I just point it to the 192.168.1.xxx:port number address and away we go.

That's exactly what I do NOT want to do though. Long way around the racetrack. I need to know if the scanner output can be utilized directly by my network. Rather the same as if I was playing a Winamp .mp3 on one machine and listening on the others as well. Thx.

Publishing to the internet may be exactly what you don't want to do...Understood.

However, it is just a setting in the software as to whether or not you wish the stream to be "public", i.e. fed to the internet listeners. REGARDLESS of whether this option is turned on or off, the process is still the same when it comes to connecting to your feed over the LAN.

Windoze Media Encoder (link mentioned above in another post), is probably the easiest to setup and run. It's not my preference, but it will work, especially for a LAN only feed.

Ryan,

I tried the media encoder last night...dloaded it about a week ago actually...but all it really seems to want to do is make a wav file even though I'm telling it to stream. I'm sure I don't have all the settings right, but I'm working through one thing at a time with it. It essentially does nothing until I tell it to stop encoding, then it just creates a file from it. -Rod-

Rather than try to make a "MS does-everything-equally-poorly" program actually work, download software designed to do what you want to do. As others have suggested, try Winamp, a streaming server (like Icecast) and a Winamp plugin. That way you're running software specifically designed to do what you want to do and, if you have a Uniden scanner, you can also stream the text. Winamp, the plugins, the text streaming software and Icecast are all free.

If you have Winamp 5.xx then it should come with the DSP plugin that will enable Winamp to be a source/encoder for the Icecast streaming server. Although many are doing it, I haven't ran across any decent tutorials showing how to stream through Winamp 5.xxx/Icecast.

I have long ago uninstalled Windoze Media Encoder, so unfortunately I cannot help you with that. While I do not disagree with Al42 the least bit, I still think that for overall ease of setting up (with no prior knowledge) a LAN only feed, WME is the best way to go.

Since you already have Winamp, Icecast can be dowloaded at icecast.org
There is also some great online documentation there as well.

The best way to keep your feed private is to not forward those ports in your router. I don't know what router everyone is using and some do work different, but mine allows full access to all computers on my LAN and all of those computers' ports without the need to forward those ports.

Here's a tutorial on how to set up winamp...

http://www.alabamarailfan.com/live-scanner.php?tutorial=1

It's the best one I've seen by far. Make your adjustments as necessary.
That's using shoutcast - good, but you have to buy one program if you want to stream the text also. (http://www.scancapecod.us/livescan/feed_tutorial.pdf is the best tutorial I've seen for winamp with shoutcast.)

Icecast and oddcast are free at http://www.oddsock.org/tools/, and Metadata Generator (if you use a 246 or 396 scanner) is also free at http://www.webdingers.com/metagenerator.zip. Setting it all up is as simple as following the directions in Icecast, installing Oddcast as the DSP plugin in Winamp and following the instructions in MG (or asking for help here in the forum).

The original post says he wants to stream audio. Text?? Sorry, but I don't understand. As you can see by my tag lines I'm streaming audio and set it up exactly as in the tutorial that I mentioned. Maybe this thread has gone over my head and I need to back out of it. I was just presenting a couple ideas on how to do what was asked.

why go to all this trouble when you can use a audio modulator. Such as the ones used for mp3 players.

I configured a 900 mhz phone for this. Have a handheld scanner listing to that feed. IC-R3 to be exact.

Thinking about making a RF remote control for the phone.Boo!-Poltergeisty :-0
