Alright. So I have been filling out form COM-22 for the scanner permit. However, I get to an information cubby hole asking for my FCC License Number.

I am looking at my ham license now, and I am not seeing any number explicitly labled as a license number. Would it be okay to use my FRN or File number? If so, which one?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't worry about it. You don't need to be a ham to get a scanner permit in Michigan. If I had to guess, they probably mean your call letters.

Regarding the issue with being a ham-
I know, but not all the officers know. i don't want to take any chances on trying to reason with a misunderstanding officer, getting arrested for obstruction/hindering/anything else, losing my scanner, and having to fight everything in court. I just see it as a precaution.

Regarding call letters-
No, there is actually a seperate cubby hole for call letters. If you'd like, and with your permission, I could email you the .pdf of the form if you'd like to look it over and see what you think.

Thanks,
Robert

I have it, and just took a look. You're correct, and I have no idea what that should be. Might just give them a call at that phone number on the form: 517-336-6674, and see what they say.

I know what you mean about getting pulled over by an officer that might not be familiar with the permit. I printed out the actual law thats under the permit in that PDF file, and keep it in my car. I learned that lesson when I was removing my car from a collision shop parking lot at night, and they tried to arrest me for stealing it! Always travel with documents for all occasions!

I think basically what they're looking for on the application is that you have a clean record, and you do not intend to chase fires. I simply told the the truth...I wanted it because scanning is my hobby, I listen to SkyWarn for weather, and monitor police so I can "avoid" situations, to ensure the safety of my family while on the road. I never heard of anyone being turned down. I had one for several years in Warren. When I moved to Macomb, I sent in a new request, and received a new permit. Not sure if that was necessary, but like you, better safe than sorry.

Yeah, I guess I will have to go ahead and give MSP a call.

As far as printing out a copy of the law, I have had officers even go so far as to tell me that it could be a fake printout, basically like a MS Word printout- even when the Michigan Legislature URL is on the bottom of the page.

I've noticed that most of the time, the authorities tend to have the opinion that anyone with a scanner is a bad person. In my opinion, that just shows the character of the person doing the judging.

Anyway, thanks for the advice!
