I am trying to program a mobile scanner and I got a list of frequencies from Radio Shack. A lot of the channels I want to receive are pre-programmed. My question is, there is a frequency number and input number on many of these, which are different. For instance, for a sheriffs dept, the frequency is 460.17500 and the input number is 465.17500. Do I need to program both numbers into the scanner?

First of all welcome to RadioReference.com. Next, I strongly suggest that you check the database here at RadioReference for the agencies you want to monitor. You might find our information more up-to-date, and additional information, depending on where you are or where you want to monitor.

Generally speaking people only need to monitor the "output" frequency of an agency (460.1750 in your example). There are cases where the input frequency is used (and not repeated on the output frequency), but it just depends on the specific agency & location you want to monitor.

gmclan hit it right on the head. Check the database here first to make sure they are correct. The input freq is generally the one that goes to a repeater it is then broadcast out on the output. So in most cases you only need to monitor the output. Hope this helps. Welcome to the community and feel free to ask if you need more assistance.

EDIT: Also with the pre-programmed freqs don't forget to re-name the alpha tags if you haven't already.

It wont hurt a thing and you may get some good extra traffic by putting both in there, just when you alpha tag them put them as A and B or something like that. Just depends on how the agencies in your area use their system. What scanner are you trying to program?

Tullahoma TN frequency

There are about 4 frequencies used in the Tullahoma, Coffee County area.
The Tullahoma Police have recently switched to 460.450.
Coffee County Sheriff's Department and Manchester Police Department 460.275
The sheriff department also uses 460.125....453.05
They all also use 460.400

They all also use several car to car frequencies that do not go through a repeater
