Scanner recomendations

I would like to purchase my first scanner but am having trouble narrowing down information on which scanner would best suit my inexperience and desired locations of interest. I would be extremely grateful for any help you can provide. I am in the Birmingham area, and would like to monitor Jeff. Co. SO and B'ham PD. My apologies for asking such a Newbie question but thank you in advance, for any direction you can give me.

I listen to JCSO and BHM FD often using two different radios, a RadioShack pro 652 and a Uniden BCD996XT. On the Jefferson county system the 652 far out performs the 996XT. I stream the JCSO on RR using the 652. It works great.
Get a RadioShack Pro 652
