I'm looking for a shoulder speaker mic that will plug into the scanner's headphone jack. It looks like what cops have but this is only a speaker, no mic. Anyone know where I can get this?

I don't know of any that are just a speaker, but I have seen people modify them to fit work with a scanner. You could try getting a cheap mic on ebay and attaching a headphone connector to it.

Radio Shack used to sell one. I don't know if they still do. Check their website or local store. Possibly Scanner World up in Albany too.

Speaker mike on Ebay -

On Ebay. I got one like this in the GE brand. I cut off the mike plug, which left the audio plug in place. Fit and works fine on my Uniden 250 handheld.

Best version since it has the pin style connector are these:

Two pin plug styles below where you'll need to cut off the mike pin plug, leaving the audio.

Good luck in your search.

The first 2 links...they have 1 connector, is that the 1/8 i believe, that will fit into the headphone jack of a scanner? Will the audio work when I plug it in, and the mic left alone.

What you will probably have to do is cut of the connector. Then figure out which two wires connect to the speaker and solder on a two pin 1/8 speaker jack. Tip should be positive, ring should be ground.

The Radio Shack ones do show up on Ebay from time to time.

Single pin connector - speaker mike

The single pin connector style appears to be the easiest to use for a hand-held scanner. I've had to cut through a two pin style and it's a bit of a hassle. As to pin diameter, if an adaptor is needed, one should be available at a Radio Shack or other place that sells audio equipment and accessories.

The single pin style obviously carries both audio out and voice in. To me it seems logical that it should carry audio from the scanner just fine. No way to know for sure without trying it out.

Please note that the audio output jack on a hand-held scanner has a component inside (resistor I suspect), that limits the audio level for use w/ head phones. Lawyers didn't think the user would have enough sense to keep the volume at a safe level. So....the audio doesn't peak out like you might expect. But since the speaker is close to your ear, you should be ok.

Take care,
Julian
