Hi, new here, got a question that I'm sure seems pretty basic to most users but I can't quite wrap my head around it from just reading the manual. I'm wondering what is the difference between channels, banks, scan lists, bands, etc. I have a Uniden BC245XLT. It has 10 banks, 30 channels per bank, 12 bands, but I don't understand what all this is. I should mention that the person I bought it form already had the trunking system (Waterloo Region) programmed into it so all I have to do is turn it on and it works but I'd like to understand more about how it's all set up because there's alot of other stuff in there that I don't want. Thanks.

I'm wondering what is the difference between channels, banks, scan lists, bands, etc. I have a Uniden BC245XLT. It has 10 banks, 30 channels per bank, 12 bands
Channels = one memory location where one frequency is stored (often contains info about that frequency: am/fm, trunked or conventional, Pl/DPL or carrier squelch.
Bank = a group of channels, like a computer folder. So if you have a 500 channel scanner with 10 banks, usually you have channels 1-50 in bank 1, and so on.
Scan lists: basically a list of frequencies/channels to be scanned. This is where having a channel 'locked out' comes in. Locked out channels are not scanned. In trunked system, the locking out is done on the list of talkgroup id's. Most scanners can also scan multiple banks at the same time, so in effect you could have several scan lists active.
band = a range of frequencies, for example vhf hi is 136-174 or so, most scanners won't cover tv channels around 180 mhz
