Scanner Suggestion

Hey everyone...

I'm new to scanning and I'm thinking about buying a scanner. The only thing that is stopping me right now is that I feel its kind of pointless if the areas I want to listen to (davidson, williamson public safety) may go encrypted.

I want to get the Uniden BCD996XT since it will handle digital and the newer p25 stuff.

Do you think it would be a waste of money at this point or not?

I think you will be OK with the 996XT. Rumors are that metro car-car and tac will be encrypted but the dispatch for the different preciencts will be in the clear.

And it's going to be a while before the changeover anyways. They are NOWHERE near being ready for the switch. Every time I check out the new control channel (the only one assigned to it) it's always trunking but dead air. No radio checks, no testing of voice Comms, encrypted or clear, nada. Metro works about as fast as a turtle when it comes to things like this.
