Scanner use in Vegas - concerns?

Hi all,

I'm heading to Las Vegas in the first week of June. I am staying at Caesar's for a conference. I want to bring along my 396 and possibly a tapped 245 and my computer to play around with Unitrunker. I don't intend to take any of my stuff outside my hotel room into the conference or casino - should I expect any grief from security or other officials? Anything other than the usual concerns (scanners on aircraft, etc) that I should think about?

I did this when I went to CES last year. I packed my scanner with the antenna and batteries separate in my carry on. No one said a word coming or going. I did spend several hours at McCarran waiting for my flight listening with earbuds. Funny thing is that there were so many around me listening to iPods, that I doubt they knew I what I was actually listening to.

Other than the airport I didn't take my scanner out of my hotel room. I did have a PC also along with editing software to change what I had downloaded into the scanner and my database of what I heard. I think as long as people fly under the RADAR that there won't be any problems.

I've done this many times without issue. Just don't bring it into the casino and you'll be fine.

I last went to Las Vegas in December. This was a trip solely for scanning, so I did a lot. I used the scanner in various public places all over town, almost always with the scanner in plain view and taking notes on several papers (I always used earbuds).

As far as actually scanning inside a casino, I would strongly discourage it. The only time I used the scanner in the casinos, I put the BCD396T into Close Call Auto Store mode and hid it under my clothes. When I was away from the casino, I looked at the frequencies captured.

The hotel room is a great place for scanning, as it's probably the only place in town you're going to be able to use multiple scanners at the same time (and use them without earbuds).

Some of the public places where I used the scanner in plain sight and had no problems:

Fashion Show Mall/Showplace Mall/Grand Canal Shoppes/Forum Shops/Miracle Mile Shops
Las Vegas Convention Center/Sands Expo Center
Fremont Street Experience
Lobbies of non-gaming hotels
The Deuce (double-decker buses) (great for climate control!)
Monorail (also good for climate control)
Assorted benches/sidewalks on the Strip

So, even though it's probably not wise to use the scanner in an actual casino, one can find a good place almost anywhere that is near the desired listening target.

The one place electronic communications is explicitly prohibited by law, (NV Gaming Control Board) is in a Sports Book area.

You mean you didn't take it up to the top of the Stratosphere? I took mine up there on the last trip...
