Sorry I am new to this.

It will be for mainly listening to local fired dept. In Columbia SC. I do travel a lot so I would like to be able to easily enter the frequencies between SC and upstate NY

If you do allot of traveling and want to monitor different parts of the country, I would look at a digital scanner, you are bound to run into digital frequencies and Trunked systems in your travels. This link will give you an idea on what's out there:
