I am looking for a scanner that lets me program a name for frequencies such as "Dispatch" "Command 1" etc... I'm told this is called alpha tags.

What are some good scanners that have this feature. If possible, I'd like it to be a small scanner as it is going in my truck.

Without knowing where you reside, it is impossible for us to reccommend a scanner:) Also, what do you mean by 'small'? Handheld, mobile? There are handhelds are considered large by some.
Wondering minds need to know.

If your looking at purchasing just a analog scanner doesn't pick up P-25 digital signals then I would go with the Uniden 346XT scanner. It is a nice compact size and should easily be able to fit inside the cup holder in your car. This scanner allows you to program in alpha tags which you are looking for.

If you want a scanner that is capable of picking up P-25 digital signals then I would go with the Uniden BCD396XT scanner which is also a nice size and will fit nicely in a cup holder of your car. Like the Uniden 346XT it also allows you to program in alpha tags.

Somebody else can fill you in on the GRE scanners since I am not that familiar with them.

Not sure you if you have visited the scannermaster website but they have a nice selection of scanners that you can look at.
