When the siginal meter on the BC796D is at the maxium and no voice, what's the problem?

Wrong CTCSS/CDCSS programmed in? Birdie? No audio on the transmission source? Fried CPU?

The same thing happens with my BC785D once in a while, but I have never really paid much attention to it as it seems to be working fine otherwise.

If you're having problems just ask questions here. There are lot of good people here who are willing to help you. If the manual is anything like the one that came with my unit, forget it. It really is confusing, especially if this is the first advanced scanner you have ever had. :(

Read the trunking threads and the threads under Uniden Scanners and you may find the answers to some of your questions. If not, post and we'll help you. :D

IT could also be caused by a birdie frequency either on or very near the frequency it is locking up on.

My PRO-96 tends to lock up on 153.830 from time to time. I found out that there's a birdie frequency on 153.8375

If it is a trunked system, nothing is wrong. It would mean it is sitting on the control channel waiting for activity.

If you are getting alot of front-end overload, you'll have signal strength bars but no audio (but maybe noise)

This is a bigger problem than just that, I think.

Been having very same type of "problem" with my 296D.

Check out this posting & susequent replies on my local scanning website. (I'm Mark M.)

 I sure hope UPMan sees this one and chimes in.

You know, discussing the same thing on three (at least) different threads - two of which are on this board, isn't very productive.

For the first poster, are we talking about conventional or trunked? Do any of the proposed causes make sense?

For the second problem, does the scanner trunk? Does it switch to a voice channel? If it does, does it unmute? Some more details would help.

I agree with Voyager. Sounds to me like nothing is wrong, except the user has programmed the wrong PLAN type in cc mode.

I don't think it got too off tangent. The main thing is to try to help our fellow hobbiest. Two things that I noticed were the original poster was a DONATING member, and even though I haven't gone digital yet, I still learn from ALL POSTINGS.

I used chain search and auto store and I bet out of 100 stored frequencies I can only hear three. What else can I do.

If I were you, and I didn't know what I was doing, I would SKIP the chain search and the auto store, TURN IT OFF.

Then go to the database here, and MANUALLY program in some KNOWN freqs for your area, listen for a while, and figure out things one step at a time. Searching and autostoring is sure to fill your scanner up with alot of junk, IMHO.

If I remember right, during Auto-Store, the scanner does mute the audio most of the time while it stores the found frequency and then moves on and doesn't stay very long monitoring the found frequency.
