I have been reading the STARS posts and now it is time to ask:

Will my 796D pick up STARS or is it time for some new hardware?
Nope, not trunk scan anyway, and will be very annoying in non-trunk mode.

So what scanner do you suggest we use to monitor this system?

Choices available at this time are Pro-96/2096 or BC396/996. Review this tuttelje thread for comparisons and problems.

GRE is going to release a PSR-500 (handheld) and PSR-600 (base/mobile) in Oct which should work. Look in GRE forum for more details.

Also review RR Wiki for specific details on all 6 scanners.

If you could I would wait for the PSR-500/600 in October. From my monitoring (others have said differently) the 96/2096 pick up better (digital) than the 996. The audio also sounds much clearer on the 96/2096. 996 is way too "digitized" of a sound compared to the 96/2096. Now the 396/996 have way many more features. Included are computer control (not just programing), 700mhz trunking (something that isn't really needed around here yet), LTR trunking, plus a few others. The new GREs will have all these features, and more, plus the digital quality of the 96/2096 (GRE made them for RS.)

Guess I'll be buying the new GRE PSR-500 when it becomes availiable. Thanks for the input.
