Scanning at a golf tournament

Hi everyone,
I am going to a golf tournament in NC in a few days and I was wondering if it is legal to bring a scanner and/or a Motorola radio into the tournament? I'm assuming it's legal, but I want to play it safe so I don't get my radio confiscated.

If you are going to the PGA, forget it.

Some local tournament probably ok.

Is the golf course private property? If so, you have to follow their rules.
And even though the public may play on it, it may still be (and probably is) private property.
Instead of asking your question here, read the rules if they publish them or call the course.

If you were watching a particularly tense part of someone's game and your radio suddenly burst into life, I think you'd find yourself out on the road accompanied by a couple of burly security people rather quickly.

It is private property, plus the club turns operations over to the PGA for the tournament. It is a major tournament, and security will be high. You will go thru a metal detector like you are getting on a plane and you might even be wanded.

The website or your ticket probably contains a few paragraphs of rules. It may not specifically mention scanners, but I would be willing to make a substantial wager you would not get on the grounds with one.

Attending ? - Leave it in the Car/home
Generally while on the grounds - Cellphones need to be Off or on Silent
and any radio/two-way will be prohibited unless part of the public safety or Association Operation.

On-Site Scanning ? - find a Fast Food or Mall near-by and search away
However don't be surprised if many have moved to DMR

No problem. But I anticipate you learned it's not worth it.

Unless you want to try scanning from the parking area. However, for most tournaments, parking is well away from the site, with bussing to entry gates so they can control the flow in and out even from off premises, where the metal detectors and such are, preceeding the lines to get on a shuttle to the course.

Since they are generally using low power FM for communications, and no repeater, you might not even pick up much from parking.

There isn't much to hear other than security and maybe some concessions organization.

They don't use radios any more to report what is happening on course. That is done with smartphones and laptops with a recorder going with each group.

What I would recommend if they have it, are the small earpiece receivers they often supply by some sponsor. This gives a broadcast of the tournament that you can listen to in one ear while roaming the course. When onsite, these allow you a better connection with what is going on everywhere, and where various players are.

I'd also suggest locating the frequencies used by whatever television network is covering the event. When the Kentucky Derby comes to town, it's pretty interesting listening to them (at least for a while). But they tend to be low power simplex operation too.

The local public safety system may use different talkgroups for large events such as these (assuming it is a TRS). So some attention might be given to Event, Special Event, Mutual Aid, Interoperability labeled talkgroups.

When I went to an LPGA event almost ten years ago, I found a lot of Golf Channel TV crew audio in the 449-451 MHz range.

450-451 and 455-456 are the normal regions to look for the Media Crews.
However, they generally also get an FCC STA [Temp License] and [my experience] in the past this has been in the Regions un-used T-Band, so don't skip the 470-512 Region
