Hello everyone! I figured I would put together a thread about scanning on the eastern Avalon here in Newfoundland. A spot for people to come together and share their findings, have questions answered, and to share information.

I am submitting data all the time to the database, working to update much of the old information. I am using a Uniden BCD996P2 scanner with all the upgrades (minus ProVoice). The antenna is a Diamond X50. While at home, my equipment is running 24/7, recording and logging all hits via Freescan. For portable operations, I use a Tram 144/440 MHz magnetic mount, and the radio is in Close Call Auto Save/Auto Store.

I have some new submissions for the St. John's, Avalon East area

I believe I may have found new information for the Newfoundland Provincial Radio (P25) system....

I have programmed "Site 52 - 155.970" into my scanner. I am located in St. Johns, NL, and am receiving this at RSSI 800+. I have been monitoring this site for a while now, to make sure it was not due to propagation or other effects.

SID 000Ch-5201,
NAC34.
155.970

I believe this P25 site may be located somewhere on the Avalon. I have copied Talk Groups 621 and 548.

Thanks, VO1IV

155.970 is indeed P25p1 format. Here's some more info (attached file) from my DSD+ check this morning.Screenshot (2).png

While monitoring RCMP this morning ( 2023-04-13), a tech announced via the old EDACS system that all members in Avalon East should be using the new Motorolas as of 11:10AM. A recent discussion I had with a member of the RNC indicated they used a Motorola to communicate with another RCMP officer in Holyrood some time ago. Seems the new system is progressing nicely.

Is this the new system ( P25 Phase 1 )that will be used throughout Newfoundland and Labrador
The encoding of the new system (UHF) is indeed P25P1 and appears to be Digitally Encrypted (DE), whereas the old system (VHF) is still P25P1 and still encrypted. This is wholly different from the EDACS format that was also used by the RCMP, which appears to be still active but carrying data only according to my recent receptions.
