I have never scanned in Boulder before. Will I be able to pick up transmissions from Denver? As of now, I just have frequencies for Boulder and Boulder County. Also, there are several counties that border Boulder County, but I don't know what the Flatirons will do to certain signals from bordering counties.

While in Boulder a few years ago, I attempted to monitor the Denver Public Safety EDACS system but the signals were too weak for me to pick it up. Granted I was trying to listen using the stock antenna and not an 800 mhz tuned antenna.

It really depends on where you are at in Boulder to be able to listen to Denver, and the height of your antenna. Weld & Larimer counties border Boulder county but that doesn't play to much importance for the City of Boulder. They are also digital so that is important to know as well. Jefferson County is close to Boulder though. A lot of their communications are also digital. If you do though have a digital capable scanner the flatirons shouldn't be to big of a problem since there are many different tower sites to choose from in the area. Personally I don't listen to much to neighboring counties except to their conventional fire/rescue paging.

I live in boulder (around colorado & foothills) and have a pretty tough time getting denver. There is only one spot my entire house where I can pick them up (even with the RS 800mhz ant).

I will be in the middle of University Hill using a Radio Shack Pro-95 with an 800MHz antenna. At my present location in NJ, the most distant signal I pick up is an amateur radio repeater in Long Island. But other than that, when I listen to conventional Fire/EMS and police, I receive clear signals generally from a 25 mile radius. Given those conditions, do you think I can pick up any Denver systems? I will program the freqencies in just to see if I can pick up a control channel, or conventional channel.

If you turn the squelch all the way down, you might be able to hear traffic from Denver.

I live up in Rawlins Friday morning till Tuesday evening. Then the rest of the time I'm back in Longmont. I wish I could just commute but it is a little to far.

I used to do the reverse of that back in the late '60s - early '70s. Worked down in the Denver area on the weekdays and then turned around on Friday evening and went back home to either Casper (winter) or Moran (summer). (Got the `commute' to Casper down to 2hrs 55min when the weather was good. {CHORTLE!}) Sure wouldn't want to have to try and do either these days.

Hopefully you'll eventually be able to eliminate the commuting down here and finally go to dispatching fulltime or maybe even get on with the FD up there. (I almost said `up here' but we haven't closed on the new place yet and until that happens we are stuck down here. {WAN GRIN!})

My commute isn't too bad. Since it's my first time living on my own It's hard for me not to go home every weekend. But after some time i'm sure i'll stop making the trip every week. It would be nice to join a fire department but I haven't checked up on it too much since my tour of duty is all or some of the entire fire season. (it's about to end soon since the monsoon weather is already in the air and everyone around is getting ready for prescribed burns. I also was told Wyoming doesn't take the national emt cert so I would have to take it again and wait for a cert from them. I'm getting used to living in Wyoming. The only hard part was departing with Burger King, Wendys, and Chipotle.
