Has anyone traveled to Brazil with their radios and know what the rule down there is for possessing one? I'm contemplating retiring there in a few years but don't want to give up my lifelong hobby. Thanks in advance

Found some info here that suggests that an amateur license is needed to a scanner. I guess I had better start studying now.

One could assume that if he is considering retiring to Brazil he is aware that they speak Portuguese.

I suggest contacting A taxa de homologação não será mais cobrada. - LABRE the amateur radio organization of Brazil. They can undoubtedly answer your questions.

The present political climate in Brazil is volatile. There are certain parts of Rio where walking around with a radio would be foolish even if legal.

I spent some time in Brazil (also Argentina and Uruguay) in 2016. I saw lots of evidence of amateur radio activity. I did not attempt to obtain a reciprocal license due to not speaking Spanish or Portuguese.

Thank you for your keen insight. I wouldn't walk around those parts even without a radio. My wife is from nearby Sao Paulo state. Campinas. I've been to Brazil many times including my first time, on a naval cruise. I've been studying the language for a few years now, very casually and should be fine for when we go. I'll check LABRE out and see if they can help. Thanks again
