I'm a "newbie" who would like to buy a police scanner to use in Bourbon County (Kansas).

Any suggestions on make/model or what I should look for when scanner shopping? Either a base scanner or a handheld would be ok (would like to know pros & cons of each).

Also, any links to some "scanning for dummies" websites would be great.

Well you can go here for a good starter list:

http://metroscan.net/ks_scan.htm

and click on the "troop h" tab for bourbon county and surrounding county
info.

since there is no trunked radio systems down your way you can keep the scanner as simple as you want.

if your on the go a lot a portable scanner might be what you want.
the new bc246t from uniden would be a good choice for portable ops plus it is PC programmable.
if your at home a lot any of the radio shack and uniden models would be ok.

it is basicly what can you afford, out where you are at most any of the basic radios will fill the bill as long as they received 800 conventional as there are some 800 conventional KHP channels there in bourbon county.

Low band has pretty much gone by way of the dodo bird....

Much the shame of that too. I kind of enjoyed the "skip" on the low band VHF radios. When I was an officer on the Leavenworth PD back in the late 70's, we were on UHF ourselves, but the Sheriff and most of the surrounding agencies except KCKS/KCMO were still on low band so we had the old Motrac radios in the cars also.

One quiet Sunday morning we hear, quite clearly, one of our EMS units start yelling on 39.22 about a sniper on top of the 1st National Bank Building downtown. EVERYBODY starts that direction, Code "3½". Dispatch is paging up the SWAT team, we are all trying to dig up our strike plates for the bullet-proof vest and dust off the riot helmets.

We get down there and there is NOTHING going on. There aren't even any left-over drunks from the night before! We don't even see a stray dog in the area....

It is then we start listening a little more carefully and discover the sniper call is from a unit in New Orleans! And the "sniper" wasn't shooting at people, he was throwing empty bottles at passing cars. It was pure coincidence that the EMS units there and our EMS units used the same unit numbers. I guess the guy was on his way back to the station and took a empty bottle of MD20/20 thru the windshield and just got a little excited.... Oh well, certainly made the shift go faster.... n0lqt ...-.-
