I have already read quite a bit on this web site & had some sucess downloading into my scanner through the USB port. I have been trying to learn scanning for the last 3 weeks. Got a PRO-164, my first scanner. I haven’t found much data specific to the Payson area.
Also; I go to Tucson, Flagstaff & Phoenix often. (Home town is Tucson) so I’m very interested in trunking. I know Phoenix PD is digital but I still want to pick up something interesting if I can. Apparently I haven’t had any luck trunk-tracking yet. Though I hear there is some limited Trunking in Payson. I've already tried downloading Gila county's trunking from Radio Reference, apparently not successfully. It’s annoying to miss the first bit of a transmission.
Like most newbees I’m crying for something, but don’t know what it is. (Frequencies I can reach in Payson would be nice). Any information you could share would be useful, if not now, then in the future. As I learn more about scanning. Thanks, DJ

P.S. Is the Larson MM-2/70-Dual Band CPL , PL259 or the Radio Shack Mag-Mount antennas worth the investment?

DJ,

I assume you are trying to download the APS TRS in Gila County. Because there are numerous towers throughout the state, I think you might have to manually enter this one into your radio.

You might be able to get away with only adding the two control channels, 857.4125 and 858.4125.

You mentioned that you are downloading the system. Be sure to enter the SID of 2350 to get the TG's.

I also assume that you checked out the information in the Gila County section:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=96

If you find something not there, submit it so that we may update it into RR.

Since your hometown is Tucson, be sure to come visit us at the monthly SouthEast Arizona Radio Monitoring group's meeting at the Village Inn on Tanque Verde. We meet between 6p and 9p. This is not a formal meeting format, we sit together at a couple of tables, eat dinner, talk about things we don't say on the message boards, demostrate new things occasionally, and even build things to make our toys work even better. Our meeting is tonight, at 6pm, 20 December.

I like the Radio Shack Mobile Multi-band antenna. I've used it on my vehicles, as well as, a filing cabinet in my home.

Note: This meeting is open TO EVERYONE, young or old, Radio Savvy to the Radio Novice. We are a great bunch that WILL help you be successful. BUT, you have to make it to the meeting(s).

isn't the APS sys Id 5C1D ?

Yes. Some software that download the data from RR, may need the SID number, otherwise it will pull the wrong system, or not at all.

I just checked the Unitrunker software and it needs to know the SID number, RR's internal system ID number, which is different from the Motorola SYSID of 5C1D transmitted with the control channel.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the information. I’m probably going to get a RS MM Antenna for my trip to Tucson this Christmas eve. I hope I receive more than just a little static on the Mohican Trail to Tucson (From the scanner, not Mrs. DJ ). I’ll see what I can make of the frequencies and other info you have given me. What is APS TRS? Sorry for my ignorance, newbee, ya know.

DJ,

Don't need to apologize about being new. We ALL were there at one time. You'll see lots of acronym usage here. APS TRS = Arizona Public Service Trunk Radio System

Good luck on the trip down.
