Doe's anyone know what happened to Chris' website Scanning Tulsa?

I miss it...layed out good and lots of info...kept current..

At one time he said he was under some pressure from one of the local law departments to pull some of his info...I told him freedom of speech.

=========================================

I used to create a book back in the 80's called :
RVACS Systems Guide to Scanning Oklahoma...about 250 pages of info just for Oklahoma...I stopped as I just ran out of time. I tried to pick up where Green Country Scanning Society left off...

Oh those days of the Pro 2004 / Cell Mods and other fun... :)

Take care everyone...
Rich

I believe he finally folded this summer, never really recovered after that breif shutdown last year. His website used to link to here, but now may be gone for good.

What sort of pressure was he receiving from law enforcement? As far as I know all the frequencies used by Tulsa area law enforcement are already available from various sources on the internet this being one of them. So why would they care about his website? Furthermore, those frequencies are public domain and can't be supressed by any agency as far as I know. I don't see how they could have pressured him to take the site down.

Yeah, let's hear some more about this pressure from law enforcement. In the last week or so I've encountered an attorney who is just looking for a good reason to sue a law enforcement agency.

Don't know if Chris is keeping in touch or not, But as I understand it he was getting pressure from either Bixby or Glenpool at about the time they were going to their EDACS systems. Someone from GPD I believe posted all the new freq's and Id's for the system before they were even up and running! After that local GPD officers used the forum to complain about the shortcomings of the EDACS system Glenpool received. Hopefully Chris will check in soon and explain better.

Do you still have this book? I'm rather new and I'm just looking to absorb as much information as I can before asking other questions.

What started it all :) ...

was when two B.A. detectives showed up at his house asking all sorts of retarted questions and stuff. I belive that it did have something to do with Bixby and Glenpool coming online. Remember, B.A. was helping build out Bixby and Glenpool network.

I cannot remember if TG assignments were "leaked" before the CC's were up or someone had ran etrunker to caputure the TG's, LCN's and stuff and then a match was made to TG assignments. However it went down, some paranoid moron in the chain-of-command thought that scantulsa.com was spy, terrorist, anarchist or whatever and, by god, they were going to get to the bottom of it! Shut this rouge webmaster down. How dare he post to the *gasp* world these highly classified TG's!

They used respect of a badge and the respect due an officer of the law to intimidate and imply that there was going to be "consequences" becasue the content on scantulsa.com was there illegally. The ironry of the situation is that whilst they were conducting thier little witch hunt, trunkedradio.net contained everything scantulsa.com did.

B.A. either ignored or was clueless about language codified in 18 U.S.C. §2511 that goes a little something like this:
(2)(g) It shall not be unlawful under this chapter [18 USCS §§ 2510 et seq.] or chapter 121 of this title [18 USCS §§ 2701 et seq.] for any person--

(i) to intercept or access an electronic communication made through an electronic communication system that is configured so that such electronic communication is readily accessible to the general public -- (2)(g)(i)
Moreover, to paraphrase (2)(g)(ii), any governmental "radio communication" that is "readily accessible" to the general public may be intercepted, regardless of any expectation of privacy.

Jeeze, guess I am still a bit irritated about that .. lol. As I said before, Chris did the right thing for him at the time, and I have no doubt that everyone respects him for it.

I for one will miss scantulsa.com, it is where I got my trunking sea legs! :)

My wife bought me a Pro-94 as a present, and the guy at RS (Peoria & 44) told her she should also get me the Police Call CD and I should visit scantulsa.com. I spent about 30 minutes trying to figure out Police Call, finally said "screw it" and started googling for frequency websites. I found cityfreq.com -- pffftpt whatever, a lame excuse for a website. Then my wife remembered scantulsa.com ...

Chris, your website has helped more people get into the scanning hobby than you might know! Thanks for all of your hard work bro.

:)

Thanks for the welcome :)

I just bought a simple RS Pro-83 to get started, and I'm contemplating a Pro-97 for Trunked listening in the Tulsa, OK area. "Rebanding" still has me a bit confused but the more I read about it the more I understand. ;)

I grew up in Muskogee where there is no trunked communication, I live in Tulsa now so I get to experience a whole new radio-technology. I haven't done much scanning since I was a child listening with my dad, but I highly enjoy listening to aircraft/police/emsa communication.

Well .. ummm .. :) .. actually there are several trunked systems in and around Muskogee, including the OHP system.

That is what is cool about radioreference.com .. tons of info all right at fingertips!

:)

As an fyi for ya, here is a link to Muskogee county in the RRDB: http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&ctid=2178

There is a lot to listen to! If you do not have enough scratch to get ya a Pro 97, consider a Pro 95. Radio Shack has those for about 100 bucks and you might find one cheaper on ebay.

Whatever radio you buy, make sure that it connects to a PC so that you can program it. That is a must have feature.

:)

Well, it looks like the database was totally accessible by php, but you might try starting with www.archive.org (Internet Archive) and picking your way through it's saved versions of the site if you're looking for something specific.

Neither actually. He's a guy I met while working one of my part time gigs. I did some work for him and he's actually a pretty decent guy....for an attorney. :)

Funny you should ask though. :)
