Just wondering Have these departments gone to encrypted frequencies? We used to be able to pick up the GRPD, Wyoming, Kentwood, Walker, Ottawa County, Kent County police frequencies, etc., with my baofeng radios ( Fv5 & Fv9). Now we don't get any. How do we begin to listen to the PD's again, or is it no longer possible to? I don't know what is needed, just asking. Thanks.

When Kent County switch to MPSCS, Law Enforcement went encrypted. Fire is still Simulcasted on VHF for paging but this will be shut off at some point as well.

You will not be able to listen to law enforcement in Kent county. You may want to look into a digital scanner for when FD VHF is turned off.

Those baofengs are pretty cheap and only have a very basic scanning ability. 911 went digital December to January 2021 last year and is multiple tower simulcast. You would need to get a real digital scanner. Get a uniden brand as whistlers at best do lousy in those situations.
Uniden model’s that are digital, prices lowest to highest:
996P2, 325P2, 436HP, Home Patrol2, 536HP, SDS 100, SDS 200.

Kent is about 1/2 way down at the link, under MODE if it’s D it in the clear, De sometimes clear, sometimes encrypted. DE is always encrypted.

Additionally Muskegon recently is digital.

Well, Kent is definitely all DE mode and all surrounding areas law enforcement too. So I guess it's a rap for any of that listening in any capacity? That would be my surmise considering it's all encrypted. Thanks for your enlightening me.

Yep...you are correct...all the "DE" talkgroups are a wrap....no listening to those anymore. You may still hear some things with the "De" talkgroups depending on if they have the encryption turned on. Other than that, you'll hear nothing, and you'll first need a digital scanner as listed above to hear those.

I’m so against across the board encryption. I understand LEIN, tactical, and some investigative TG’s being encrypted but dispatch should be in the clear. There are far more law abiding citizens who like to monitor and can be your extra set of eyes and ears in a community if they know what’s going on than there are criminals monitoring. Unfortunately policing is turning away from being community oriented and becoming more “keep a boot on their necks” oriented.
