I've heard a Schaumburg truck/ambulance say "go to talkaround" a few times, and never have been able to figure out what channel it is, it's not a talkgroup on the system, anyone know what the FD is using for talkaround these days? I've never heard anything on the PD talkaround frequencies (the listed ones, anyway), but are they using those? Any help is appreciated!

That is a repeater talk-around. Normally a portable radio talks to the repeater on an input frequency, then the signal is re-broadcast on another frequency (output), the one you normally hear for that repeater.

On "talk-around", (basically a limited range car to car channel), the portable radio transmits on the output frequency instead, which allows communications with other nearby units without using another frequency. This also permits the units to still hear the repeater which is on the output too. (Talking Around the Repeater).

Since this signal is not going through the repeater you will only hear it when close enough to the transmitting unit. On a 4 watt portable this may only be a block or two.

Well I can get the Streamwood PD tac channel with no problem, which uses 5 watt mobiles simplex. That's about 7-10 miles away. In theory if they're using a VHF/UHF channel for talkaround, I should be able to find it/listen to it for a town that's literally right next to me.

Also, I doubt that's the terminology they're using, since Schaumburg uses a Moto. Type II system, there is no one input/ouput.

when you hear that have you checked the fire-ground, vtac and I tac channels that would be my first guess if its not there you mite want to do a sweep of the 800 MHz band when you hear that maybe they have some 800 MHz simplex like the police do. sorry I cant be of more help I only heard of FD talk around channels when you mentioned them hear but i am pretty close to schaumburg as well so I will listen for it and let you know if I find something.

wish you luck,
Bob

Try the ITAC channels, I have heard they use these in simplex mode.

id try normal and re-banded as I have seen agencies in the area using both. for example Joliet uses the re-banded versions of them for tac and direct Com's, but will county and the ISP seem to use the normal (non-re-banded) channels for tac and talk around so your best bet is probably to just monitor both in CSQ mode for now.

wish you luck,
Bob

8 months later, but I finally figured it out.

They are in fact using the rebanded I-TAC4 (853.0125) with a PL of 88.5. They were running a speed trap not too far away from me and using the channel to report speeds from the radar operator to the officers ahead, lots of activity.
