I have heard that starting Aug 1, 2005 that all troopers in SC will start using a permant call sign depending on their troop number, rank, and badge number.
Trying to get confirmation on that from a source, but if anyone else has heard let me know.

Troop 1 is definitely using new call signs that are 4 digits like "23-72". Any one know the breakdown of what each number means?

I know that the last three to four digits are their badge number, and I think the first 1 or 2 is the troop ID and rank. Seargents will have a "sam" in the call sign, corporals, I think, will have a "frank" in the call sign, etc. I am still trying to get used to hearing all those numbers.

Have not figured out any of these call signs either. I know that the trooper whoose call sign was F- 33 is now 2Adam 30. I think he is a Corporal - range 30's and 40's and the Sgts. used to have a call sign that was in the teens to 20's range.

Corporal

I heard one of the Corpral's yesterday I believe was G33 now ID as 2 adam 88. Another I believe is a SGT ID'd as 2 adam 114. Interesting the Troop 7 guys are 29xx to 23xx and does not really matter which sector. Continue to follow.

Here in Charleston I've everything from units 23xx-28xx as well as 2 Adam 30, who I believe to be a Corporal. Still can't figure out the system. As far as the earlier question, When they say "So Far" they are inquiring if they copied the 10-43 they have been given, So Far. There may be more 10-43 to come. Most often heard when they are giving info such as VIN#'s, owners name and address, etc.

"So Far"

NCSHP Troopers can also be heard using "So Far" when giving info to their dispatchers. This usually means the Trooper has further for the dispatcher. I've even found myself using this on occasion.

"So far..."

I'm guessing this is a hold-over from the days when HP used the low-band freqs extensively. I think it was common for longer transmissions to be covered up by foreign stations. So they break their transmission up to ensure the dispatcher has received what they've said to that point before continuing.

Of course, that's not so much of an issue when using a trunked system.

It might also be to give others a chance to break into the conversation for some emergency traffic.

New unit ID

Last night I heard a 2 Sam 2 call. I assume it was a Sargent. I do not remeber his old unit number but am pretty sure he was G11.

if a trooper has a four digit call sign, he is a lance corporal or below, ex, 2193, will be a trooper lance corporal or below and the last three digits being his badge number.
always, with any trooper call sign the last 2 to 3 digits is his badge number.

A-corporal
S-seargent
F-first seargents
L-Leuitenant
C-captain

ex. 2a43 will be a corporal with a badge number of 43, and so on

Thanks

That helps. I wonder why they are using 2 sam xxx not just sam. I guess everyone's number needs to start with a 2. I have been listening trying to figure this out. I did hear two different Sargents that I recognize last night using sam unit numbers. I have not heard a Frank unit or above yet. Listening curiously here in O'burg Cty.

I also have heard a call sign starting with a 4xxx, maybe thinking that each division of SCDPS has a different starting number

I believe the 4xxx are the DoT officers that inspect trucks. I can't remember what they call them, but they work at the truck scales. I hear them stopping trucks a lot.

The agency you are refering to is the State Transport Police. They are actually a division of the Department of Public Safety. I have also suspected the 4XXX being SCTP. They were formely the "X" units. By the way, the Bureau of Protective Services is 3XXX.
