SCHP Greenville/Spartanburg

I am pretty new to this whole trunk tracking scanning thing. Just purchased a PSR-500 a few months ago and have been enjoying learning about scanning. I had been using an old Uniden but decided to upgrade to the GRE for it's digital and trunk tracking capabilities.

But here is a question for everyone that I can not figure out.

I live in Greenville but work in Spartanburg, so I have Troop 3 of the SC Highway Patrol programmed in.

I have noticed that when I am in GREENVILLE, I can pick up the SPARTANBURG HP better than the Greenville HP. It's usually clearer with less static.

Greenville PD, who is also on the Palmetto800 system works great, but just the HP causes some problem. Any ideas what is causing this? Could I have done something wrong?

Well, it depends on which SITE you're receiving Greenville HP on and where you are in relation to that.

Spartanburg and Greenville HP talkgroups are carried on pretty much all sites in each county. So you should hear both equally well if you're listening to both off the same tower site. As you drive from Greenville to Spartanburg, you'll want to make sure your scanner switches to the site with the best signal.

How do you have your Palmetto 800 TSYS object or objects set up? I set up a separate TSYS object for Spartanburg (including sites 19, 36, 18, 17, and 16) and Greenville (including sites 35, 31, 42, 36, 17 and 16). I add all SCHP Troop 3 talkgroups to each TSYS, and have scan lists set up to toggle between groups on different TSYS objects. I generally set Multi-site to On and Stat because I prefer to listen to each tower site sequentially.

You can experiment with the Roam setting and thresholds to have the scanner automatically detect the best tower site. I find that site 35 is fine on I-85 from about Pehlam Road westward, and Site 19 is fine from about the Airport exit eastward. In between I sometimes try Site 36 or 17.
