I see them use two-way radios, the kind construction sites use. I live about 25-35 miles from the school and my area is hilly. I live in a single story house and my antenna is a discone that is mounted 10 feet above the roof. They are not the walmart motorola style family radios though. I looked in the FCC license search and the school is not listed. They look sort of like this

Since they are probably using simplex (non-repeater), chances are you won't be able to pick them up, even if you did know the frequency.

I have a mobile scanner antenna on my truck and I may be able to listen in the parking lot while I am waiting to leave.

Based on what you described, I would suggest searching the frequencies listed here:
http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Common_Itinerant_and_Business

Before you try all of those, check these ones out as they seem to be the most popular:
464.5000 Brown Dot
464.5500 Yellow Dot
151.6250 Red Dot
151.9550 Purple Dot
154.5700 Blue Dot / MURS 4
154.6000 Green Dot / MURS 5
151.8200 MURS 1
151.8800 MURS 2
151.9400 MURS 3
