I recently listened to what I believe to be a local business using single inversion
scrambling on frs ch. 9.
Now,I think these might be motorola talkabout types but i'm not sure.
Does anybody know which "moto" models are single inversion equipped??
I bought a pair of SX 700 2w. with pl/dpl. and thought these stated scrambled
but dummy me! Speaker audio in these things suck too!

For Uniden, that would be:
GMR1048
GMR1558
GMR1588
GMR1595

The last two models also have a proprietary "Direct Call" mode that lets you communicate directly with another person in your group without other people in your group hearing the comms.

The Cobra Microtalk with the scramble is their Series 3 unit. FRS - 300 These are 14ch. FRS only rigs with the 500mw power.

I would choose a FRS/GMRS model with more available output power and a removable antenna option.

good luck

I don't believe you'll find a legal FRS radio capable of more than 500mw of power with a removable antenna. GMRS yes FRS no.

Icom also offer simple inversion on many of their radios. While they're not SUPPOSED to be set up on FRS channels as they have detachable antennas, actually it's pretty common to find one that someone
bent the rules on and programmed up on FRS channels. I get requests for FRS channels on such radios regularly. I turn them down.

Heck, once I read a Motorola Astro Spectra, a UHF 110 watt version, and all the FRS channels were
in it. I think the 110 watt output was a TINY bit over the legal limit of half a watt. ;)

Scrambled FRS Radio's

I bought 4 a few years back that have the scramble option. They are made by Ranger. Actually simple speech inversion. I have software to un-scramble those. Fresno PD way back in 1975 or so used to use speech inversion. The Ranger FRS that has SI are yellow. They also make other colored radios that do not do SI.

If the radio has both FRS and GMRS in it, the antenna cannot be removable.

To the poster, it is legal to use speech inversion on business and FRS frequencies. It is not legal on amateur radio frequencies as everyone is entitled to hear what everyone else is saying. Codes are not legal to use on ham radio either.

Other than the Q codes and Morse Code, you mean. QSL? :)

Yes, the regulations speak to this. They say something similar to the codes used have to be generally understood by other users or something like that. I probably haven't restated that very well, however, I don't have time to look it up.

kenwood made a real nice FRS legal HT with Speech Inversion on it.

they are discontinued.

i think the best FRS ever made was the Icom IC4008A, but i don't believe they did inversion scrambling on them.

FYI. Alinco and Icom offers receivers that gives you the chance to listen to scambled communications!
The alinco DJ-X3 and the icom IC-R20.
