• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is there a Motorola, Harris, Icom or other radio , that uses the same kind of scrambler that is built in to my tk3160, tk8180, tk8160 and tk3180? TIA

Pretty sure it is a fixed inversion scrambler and yes, many radios come with fixed inversion built in. The trick will be finding what inversion frequency your Kenwood radio is using. I'd guess 3KHz.

The inversion frequency doesn't have to match exactly, but if you're not close enough the voice will sound too low or tiny. If you're too far off it likely won't work.

So, you need to determine the inversion frequency, then research other radios that come with inversion scrambling and see if they're compatable.

Or just buy another radio like the model you have.

What is it you're trying to do?

The Kenwood's use a simple voice inversion scrambler. I believe Icom use those. Not sure about Motorola or Harris.

The Kenwood's can also have a separate scrambler board installed, so you do have options other than the included one.

Thanks....got my eye on either Motorola APX 7000 or Harris XG 100....wanted to talk and be compatible with my Kenwoods while scrambled.

Motorola and Harris use Aes encryption not single inversion scrambling, which is not the same thing. 73, n9zas

Get NX 5000 series. Still a kenwood, all you need in one portable.

Activating a button for descrambler

With the Kenwood TK 8180, how do I activate the voice inversion descrambler function/button? I am not finding this in the "how-to" areas of the manuals. From what I have read, I should be able to select the channel where the V/I scrambling is happening, and then press a designated button and scroll the selection until I get a clear voice. Any ideas? :)

Does not work that way.
you have to know what the code/shift is. There is no tuning or vfo way about it.
It's on or off, go into key assignment and set it to a button. Press and hold must be turned on, then you can choose from 1 to 16, the code you want to use.

Please explain this as if I were in 3rd grade. :) I am a little slow when it comes to this stuff. "Press and hold function." I have the TK-8360. From turning on the unit, accessing the unit manually or via programming, how do I select codes 1-16 on a particular channel? In newbie terms, if you can. Thanks!

I figured out the way to change the codes, but is it a crap shoot? There are many, many codes. How does one eliminate it down to the right one? Can I use the VFO modes, figure out which level it is on the AOR 8200, then go over to the TK and enter a corresponding code? This is supposed to be easier than actual digital encryption, but looks just as impossible. Any ideas?

There's an Android app called Voice Scrambler which has about 8 or so selectable inversion freq's.

If you're trying to match an inversion scrambler to work with another radio and you're not sure of the proper inversion frequency you can map the inversion freq to the scrambler code by using the above app or just do it by trial and error.

Hint- Most manufacturers set the inversion frequency near 3KHz to avoid signal loss.

Radio filtering is usually 300-3000Hz and inversion points are generally anywhere between 2600Hz-4100Hz, with 3000-3300Hz being the sweet spot.

Are you aware of any IOS/Apple apps that do this. I don't have android. :)
