Hello group! I'm a new member and not too savvy about frequencies, but I'm a decent computer programmer. I live in Driggs, ID at the base of the Grand Tetons, I drive the local bus, and I recently bought a BCD436HP to keep track of the local Law, Fire and EMS.

I signed up for the Premium service and I'm now developing a program called Scwelch to access the API. All of my work is not for profit, just for the love of the game.

If you guys would give the app a try and send me some feedback, that would be great. I'm presenting the API data, but I'm not sure how to present it in a way that would be practical to a user.

Thanks in advance,

Jim ( Bus Driver Jim ) Hamilton

I looked at your link. Maybe it's not fully functional on Safari on an iPad, or maybe I'm not understanding the intent. If you are just trying to present the Radioreference data in a different way, then I guess I don't see the point. We already have adequate ways to view that data, and various programming software available that can access that data for us so we can organize it to our liking and upload it to our radios.
Or maybe I'm just missing the point?

I was kind of hoping to see a shot where it would show a trunked system. I am curious to see how it lays out.

Refresh...

I just wanted to say that I've had the week off from driving my bus and I'm hunkered down in a snow storm and I've been tweaking my app Scwelch quite a bit. It's evolving nicely and if you've visited it recently I urge you to do a browser refresh :) Thanks for checking out my work!

Yeah - I'm going to enter my id and password on an unknown website - sorry.

Yep, not a good idea at all. Always be wary of anyone asking for your ID and password for any reason.

Wouldn't that be the same as us asking the OP to post his ID and password so we can try it out?

Really?

Wow, it's getting weird... Already I'm developing not for profit code on an api that's only available to folks that are paying the host for the privilege, which means my friends never get to see my work unless they're really into radio frequencies, and this person thinks I'm trying to scam his id and password. Really? sigh...

It's my understanding that to develop a tool that gives an RR subscriber access to their database, they must provide a username and password. I'm not being antagonistic, but what am I missing here? I'm just trying to give a valid user cool access to the RR DB.

I pass the username/password data to .php routines that access the API via SOAP.

Hi Jim;

I think everyone here appreciates your effort but please also try to understand ...

1. this is the internet
2. most on the forum has ever actually met you in real life.
3. it is unfair for you to expect a stranger to trust you particularly when (a) you've been a member for about a month and (b) have a forum post count of 6 (as of this moment).

You may be offended by other people's caution but please don't. No one is saying you have ill intent. Rather, they are pointing out the risk of handing over their credentials to another party.

Thank you! But still, how else do third-party software developers provide registered users access to this api without prompting for credentials?

I just don't get it...

Which api are you referring to in this application?
What is soap?
Are you authenticating against rr's ldap securely?
