Scytale and SDR# (newbie INMARSAT questions)

my setup is fairly simple - AirSpy R2 with the new RTL-SDR INMARSAT antenna -- this one: RTL-SDR patch antenna (new)

here is a sample of what I see

my questions are sort of simple. From what I see above, there are about 4 different kinds of signals here.

"spikes" (just below 1.538 GHz)
"mountains" (just below 1.539 GHz)
"small plateau" (4 of them in between 1.540 and 1.541 GHz)
"large plateau" (1 just past the 4 smalls and on the red center marker (and to the right of the red marker)

is there a good page somewhere that explains what these signals are?

here is a video of some "pulsating spikes" - what are these? (these continuously pulse - I do not believe they are inmarsat phone calls) - focus on the area around the red channel marker.

SDR# video

Next, the ScyTale-C plugin from SDR sharp.... there are several different constellation "lock" patterns. What's the difference?

The above has a "double cluster" lock signature.

The above image has a "flat cluster" lock signature.

I also see some "spikes" that are just a single cluster on lock signature.

Finally --- I am using USB mode and 4khz bandwidth - is this more or less, correct?

JAERO is necessary with some AERO frequencies (600, 1200, 8400, 10500bps signals): JAERO

I am very new to this kind of monitoring as well. I will be watching this thread for any answers that I might could get something out of as well. As for your questions the only one I can answer is yes - 4khz b/w and USB. The wider the signal is I think is the more bandwidth it is taking up. I have been using the same web page that Jimarc 33 referred you to. Looking up different ACARS freqs for Jaero and Maritime freqs for Scytale on the internet. I'm just kind of jumping in and learning as I go. I wish there was more info on this somewhere. Even the Youtube videos on Inmarsat monitoring and kind of lacking with really in depth info. I need a L-Band for Dummies book.

FYI -- i have successfully decoded ACARS 10500bps messages with Jaero!

Although the above site is well-know, it is not well kept up to date and often inaccurate (listeing gone transmissions and it ignored a major change made a couple years ago where major INMARSAT sites themselves took over frequencies from other sitesbut the LES IDs were not changed for legacy purposes). Here is a list that I researched and logged within the last year as part of my regular updating (I use a 4 ft dish and various software for Aero, other software for INMARSAT -C and hand decode INMARSAT-D/IsatM2M after figuring out the coding myself). I regulary update this in satellite forum and on reddit in the signalidentification forum. Essentially no hobbiest is decoding any of the other modes.

As I mentioned, note some other lists give different locations for the LES numbers. But INMARSAT consolidated the uplinks from the ground sites to a few select locations for these services several years ago but kept the legacy LES numbers to make it simple for the users. I use that new information. Note that INMARSAT D+/IsatM2m is scheduled to cease operations at the end of this year. (It was supposed to do that at the end of last year but was extended--so we will have to see what happens at the end of this year).

btw, wanted to add - for 10500bps Aero decoding, I am using USB and 11khz bandwidth.

Jaero seems to be happy with these settings for the high(er) speed aero signals.

here are two 10500 signals next to each other so you can see what they look like compared to other signals.
