Hi,

So I’ve been looking into buying an sdr dongle to monitor my local p25 system. Would I need to buy 2 dongles to correctly set it up or will 1 work fine? and will simulcast affect anything? I’m specifically trying to monitor Texas City Police which should be phase 1. Any help is appreciated.

Probably best to post this in the SDR forums but if you want to actually listen to P25, you will probably need 2 dongles, one for the control channel and one for voice traffic. With one dongle you will only be able to decode the control channel for P25.

It depends on the software and how far apart frequencies are that you want to monitor. Most likely, you would need two to four. The inexpensive dongles can cover as much 2 MHz or so. If the control channel and active voice channels were within that 2 MHz, you might only need 1 if you are using SDRTrunk. In reality, things are spread out much more, and you'll need more.

Agreed with KTR722, if you need any more help, check out the SDR forums.

Happy Scanning,
Ben
