SDR newby suggestions

hi I am a programmer with 15 years experience. I want to start my journey with sdr and radio technologies in general. I have a hack rf and simple antena but I can easily expand my gear as I progress into the domain. I am looking for a project with good educational quality, feasible for newby. I am using GNU radio and matlab. What would you suggest? I don't want to hit a wall with my head, on my first approach into this field.
