AA few thoughts on this rather bizzare thread.
Saint, you said you tried everything and can't get your SDRplay to work. It doesn't seem like you tried different software. HDSDR works great and pretty easy. I use SDR Console too and it is more complex but it also works great - the very latest version (released in last week or so fixed a lot of issues). SDR Sharp works as well but... well, you know...
edmscan, you said you would rather stick to your scanners because the SDRplay is deaf on VHF and above. I can't speak for yours of course, but I find sensitivity is great on everything from HF to UHF. I have done comparisons to my Kenwood TS-2000 and the SDRplay picks up everything the kenwood can. I have several antennas - HF, VHF, UHF, 800 Mhz, Discone and all of them produce the results they should when coupled with the SDRplay. I regularly use mine for amateur satellite communications - not something you can do with a deaf receiver.
You both complained of trouble with SDR Console. Why not try HDSDR? Easy to use and works well for everything.
Like KF7YN said - don't run the gain too high especially if you are in an urban environment. SDRs give us a lot of flexibility but there are pros and cons too that wide bandwidth and sensitive receiver. If strong local stations are present you may need some filtering on any of these lower priced SDRs.
People are trying to offer advice and help but I get the feeling some people would rather not accept help and just blame software and/or hardware when both the hardware and software are working great for 99% of the people.
I got my feet wet with a the RTL SDRs and was blown away by the whole SDR thing. I doubt I will spend thousands for a SDR receiver but for $149 I think the SDRplay is an awesome piece of hardware that lets me do things with radio I never could before at a price I can stomach.
Finally.... These are not scanners, they are receivers. Big difference. I'm aware that we all know that but sometimes It seems people buy SDRs thinking they will replace a scanner. Yes, I know there are scanning plugins.
