One last post before I pack it it. Control frequency is hopping all over the place as it should. Lots of messages. Getting some clicks here and there.

The control frequency I chose is for the LA Department of Water. Does this mean, even with the talk groups and aliases that I will only get department activity?
Control frequencies on a trunked system serve all TGs assigned to a particular site. They are not for a specific department.

Also, this is what the main window should look like. I'm monitoring two sites on one trunking system, which is why you see two control channels (in orange) at the top. The control channels can change, but in my case they pretty much stay the same. Voice channels come and go as they are used.

The "ALLTG" talkgroup is actually a range:

So now that I have audio I don’t really understand how the talk group thing works. How do I pick up conversations on frequencies other than the four that are being scanned? I have imported some groups and added them to an alias. Guess I just don’t understand the trunk system.

The four being scanned are control channels. Trunking works nothing like conventional channels where one frequency is used for law dispatch, another is used for fire dispatch, etc. Rather than repeat, here are two good tutorials on trunking:
