I'm running SDRTrunk v.5 alpha 6 on Windows 10 using 2 RTL dongles to listen to CLMRN. Has been great for months. All of a sudden now - the system goes Idle every few days. Restarting SDRTrunk fixes it, but annoying to do this and I have to always check if it's back in Idle mode.

Specifically I'm listening to site - Troop L Simulcast using just the control channel 859.7625
This is the last message that is logged in the Messages window -
INAC:929 TSBK3 SEC CCH BROADCST RFSS:3 SITE: 15 CHAN A'0-1037 SERVICE OPTIONS: (BACKUP CONTROL CHANNEL] CHAN B:0-1197 SERVICE OPTIONS: (BACKUP CONTROL CHANNEL]

What else can I do to fix this issue?

I have the same setup as far as your version of Windows, dongles, and SDRTrunk and can say that I also run into this idle issue but it occurs more often for me. I have it setup on an older laptop with limited resources so I just attributed the problem to that. How is the performance of your PC? Take a look at Task Manager and see if there are any programs monopolizing the memory or CPU. You can also check out the 'Startup' tab also in Task Manager and disable any programs that are not needed to start automatically. Could be antivirus too that is interfering. I've put all the directories that SDRTrunk uses into the exclusion list so they are not scanned. You can find these directories listed in the 'User Preferences' in SDRTrunk under 'File Storage-->Directories'. Did you install any new programs recently? I think this issue might not be directly related to SDRTrunk but an overall PC performance issue.

PC performance is not a concern, i5 - CPU utilization hangs around 20%, RAM is lass than 50%
No new software except forced windows updates :(
No antivirus.

In User Preferences, try changing the Tuner Channelizer from Polyphase to Heterodyne and see if that helps. You'll need to restart SDRTrunk for the change to take effect.

is it possible a specific USB port on the computer could be part of the issue? I've reorganized my tower a bit, and very possible I switched USB ports for 1 or both dongles.

  • Make sure that you have the correct modulation selected for the channel definition. In the case of a simulcast cell, that would be LSM
  • Make sure you have a solid signal and it looks strong and centered on the tuner's spectrum display
  • Make sure you have the correct alternate control channel frequencies in the channel definition for the site, and set your Frequency Rotation Delay to 750ms
  • Enable the option to Ignore Data Calls unless you have a specific reason for wanting the dongle to tune to those channels
And yes, it's possibly a USB issue. Some dongles do not like USB 3.x ports, and actually function better when plugged into old school USB 2.0 ports.

When I ran my system on windows i would get "low Memory" after 24 hrs even with a hack I read about. I put the system on my mac and it will run for days. Sometimes. my cats hit the dongles when running about and then i have to restart it. Like any computer it needs a restart now and again.

Also go into your PC's power settings and make sure the USBs are not in energy saver mode. You may have had a winders update that "modified" that for you...

update - the system went a few days when I switched Tuner Channelizer to Heterodyne, but went Idle again. The common thread I'm seeing is the last message received, same as last time -
INAC:929 TSBK3 SEC CCH BROADCST RFSS:3 SITE: 15 CHAN A'0-1037 SERVICE OPTIONS: (BACKUP CONTROL CHANNEL] CHAN B:0-1197 SERVICE OPTIONS: (BACKUP CONTROL CHANNEL]

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Never seen that, but I do see “memory leak” all the time when mine goes idle. I’ve resorted to deleting everything sdrtrunk related(temp files also) and starting over. I usually get 2 weeks before it does it again

Seems that my USB 3.0 hub was the culprit. Plugged both dongles directly into the computer USB ports and now runs w/o issue.

I found (in Linux, i7, 28GB ram) the waterfall display is a resource hog. I noticed the cpu usage was pretty high while running sdr trunk with the waterfall active. I disabled the waterfall and saw my cpu usage go down MARKEDLY. I find the waterfall not necessary.
