SDS 100 / 200 and Simulcast Distortion.

Bought the 200 because the 536 was so garbled at times it sounded encrypted at times. The 200 is far more superior in audio quality. Older eyesight, fat fingers and a bigger speaker helped me decide on the 200 Thankfully, ProScan has eliminated any need for a portable scanner which I cannot legally possess in my vehicle in my state.

Get yourself an amateur radio license and you should be GTG. That is, unless Indiana doesn’t provide an exemption for ham radio operators. Obtaining one is a piece of cake and there are a number of useful online resources where you can study the actual questions that are asked on the test. Hamtestonline.com is hands down the easiest one out there. Just make sure the questions you are studying are the most current ones being used and you should be all set. Good luck!

Here is a video I took to compare my 100 to the Radio Shack Pro 106. My SDS performs flawlessly.

Couldn't you find an older GRE radio for comparison? The 106 was developed in the early part of this century and has no chance of being good on simulcast.

I passed the tech a few moons ago (ok, many) with little studying. At the time, it was more safety oriented than anything, such as installing an antenna near overhead power lines.

Couldn't you find an older GRE radio for comparison? The 106 was developed in the early part of this century and has no chance of being good on simulcast.
Go figure that my new system is faster than a Pentium Pro! :D

Originally used my BCD996P2 for simulcast system here. It was not very good....But when I got the SDS200 there was a definite improvement. I was using an 800mhz mag mount on roof. I figured since I was using the SDS200 strictly for P25 I'd use a dedicated antenna. This set up worked OK....Till I got yagi (800mhz) and putzed around with orienting it till I got best performance. All I can say is with the yagi I get better performance than with the mag mount. Still some simulcast issues on one of the sites I monitor. But for the most part the sds200 with yagi gives me the best results compared with previous set ups.

How does the SDS-100 do on analog VHF/UHF reception?

I find the SDS to be excellent on VHF UHF, however you do have to use the filters properly in department options of the frequencies you want to improve.

You sit on the frequency you're having a problem with and use the global filter which is set to normal filter by default to apply invert, wide invert, wide normal or no filter at all and watch your RSSI and noise level until you find the best filter. Return the global filter to normal which will apply normal filter to all objects you don't go into and change in site options or department options.

Go to Department options that cover the frequency you're trying to apply the filter to and apply the filter you found best during your Global sampling. This will affect every frequency under that department so you need to group your conventional frequencies according to groups like aviation, rail, marine frequencies that will all call for the same filter.

Some things to remember are don't use Auto filters as they sample all the filters and slow scanning down and you don't know what filter worked anyway.

Remember filters are responding to your own RF environment, not the next guy so blanket statements like no filter at all works best refers to that person's experience not yours.

Be sure to put the filter indicator on your display as it'll make things much easier.

You can also toggle function 7 and apply ifx and see if that works, if it doesn't make any difference then toggle It Off.

Hope this helps people improve their VHF UHF reception.
