I have a sds 100 and i was wondering should i let my battery go all the way down before i charge it up or just charge it once it starts dying?

Seconded— do not let the scanner die. As soon as your scanner indicates battery low, charge the battery or swap for a fresh battery if you have one.

Check out the fact that the scanner has parameters that you can set on how low of a percentage the battery will go before being warned.

Once you get the alert that your battery is low and you are warned, you can turn it off and turn it back on again and it will run for a bit before getting the warning again.

The default that it is set on, works fine, battery has no memory, you can keep it charged full all the time if you want or just swap out batteries from an external charger.

thats exactly what i do just making sure that wasnt overkill on charging you know
Cool. Typically just let it run down until it warns you, then charge & you’re set. I have my low battery alert thresh hold set to 3300 (3.30v). That gives me at least five minutes before it powers off, but it can be different for everyone. Try and pay attention to the voltage when it indicates the battery is low. Then you can set your own thresh hold that way. I also have the beep alert set, once every 45 seconds.
I also added the battery voltage & USB BUS 2 (charging port) indicators on the Detailed screens (conventional & trunking). Just an idea to play with if you want to.

If you want to prolong the useful lifespan of the Li-ion cell it's better to continually top up the battery rather than discharging it to the SDS100's default cut off point which stresses the cell.

I have the low battery warning on my SDS100 set to 3.6 volts.

Information on Li-ion cells here:

Effective charging of Li-ion is not as complex as the old Ni-Cd batteries. Only 2 important caveats: don't let it run all the way down and don't over-charge it.

I've let my 5+ year old battery discharge completely at times, charged it back up in the scanner, and all is well. You'll be fine if it happens, it's not the end of the world and won't ruin the battery.
