Will the unit charge while GPS is plugged in and battery is set to charge while on in my vehicle?

Mine did. On a recent trip to Michigan, I used GPS for most of the trip and it kept the 100 charged. There are separate data and power contacts in the USB plug. That assumes there's enough amperage coming through the cigarette lighter plug.

You have to have a adapter capable of at least 1A preferably 2A. If not you get the dreaded low voltage warning.

He won't need an adapter if he's plugged into the cigarette lighter outlet. The GPS harness should provide enough to power both the puck and provide 5V and sufficient amperage to the scanner through the USB plug.

Well since the SDS 100 GPS adapter cable has a USB plug I guess he would need an adapter to hook it to a cigarette lighter plug. Unless the vehicle has an unused USB slot.

These two just don't connect without an adapter

One of these "adapters" is only rated at 500mA. The other is a dual rated at 2.4A each.

Okay, I apologize. My GPS "harness" does have an adapter: 12V in and 5V, 1.9A out. For the life of me I was thinking it had a cigarette lighter plug on it but I dragged it out and Voilà!, there's the adapter.

Anyway, I'm waiting on Jon to come up with a rechargeable GPS like the one for the 436 when he has the time. :) I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Actually, I'm a big fan.

I started to think you had altered the original rs232 with cigarette plug over to the SDS 100. There are some who did and granted then an adapter isn't needed.

If I made those alterations the same way I worked this thread I would have sparks, a puff of smoke and the odor of ozone, I'll stick with the adapter.

I used an unused USB slot and it would not power the unit, it would pop up on the screen low usb bus voltage and scanner would not work

Yep, that is another issue. Most USB connections don't provide enough amperage.

Your best bet is to use a cigarette lighter adapter because you probably have up to 15 amps available there. Most automotive USB units have minimum amperage and some will not charge at all because they are designed for input to the audio system. They will not charge anything.

They may have to change the name since most if not all newer cars don't have a cigarette lighter any more.

Yeah. My car has 5 "cigarette lighter" plugs, none of which will light a cigarette.
