Hey all, im scanning suffolk county ny and some channels sound better than others. I have been told to play around with the “filters” but what exactly do those filters do and what do they mean

We have had MANY discussions on those filters. You can find all the discussions linked in our FAQ, viz.

Go to section 6.1 (How do I), then scroll down a bit for the Global Filters question (around the 10th question). Grab a cup of coffee or your favorite brew, you're going to be here a while

By the way, bookmark that page. There's a lot of details in there that the Easier to Read nor the Uniden manuals ever address.

So Suffolk County has a Type ll smart zone system being replaced by a phase 2 p25 system for Suffolk County Police. It also has a ton of other stuff to listen to whether you're on the South Shore or the North Shore.

Have no idea where you are but trying to keep this simple, you have two ways to address filters. You can have Global filters that you go into settings on the menu and pick from, they are Global filters that affect every object on the radio. These are for the purpose of sampling, it's a temporary setting to help you to find a specific filter that may help you with a problematic system or object. It's currently set at normal filter which is default by design.. every object is on normal filter on your radio.

It's meant to stay on normal filter, normal filter is picked for a reason as it is most appropriate for most situations. Global filters are meant for sampling and testing. Then you returned it to normal. Filters are for for troubleshooting when you have a problem of clipped or missed transmissions on a system or poor reception on a conventional object that should be coming in better, like it does on older conventional scanners.

Filters should be sampled on the radio itself, and adjusted through the keyboard of the radio using reception indicators like noise level and error rate. It's not necessary to change a filter on every object on the radio, it's a troubleshooting device for poor reception on an object or system.

Want to find an optimal filter setting from wide invert, wide normal, invert or no filter at all. Remember the new filter and return Global to normal as it affects every object on the radio and you don't want to compromise reception on objects that do well on normal. Remember your new choice.

If it's a system you want to drill down on the menu on the radio to site options and apply the filter to all of the sites you listen to, hopefully it'll only be one or two as you have avoided all the others you don't need. You now have that filter applied to that particular system while the rest of the objects on the radio remain at default normal.

If it's a conventional item you can't apply a filter to a specific Channel you have to apply it to department options that that channel falls under. Usually works out well as the channels under a department usually benefit from the same filter..

Don't use Auto filters as they sample each filter and slow scanning way down. You may also want to amend your display options to show the filter indicator. It makes it a lot easier to keep track. Once you have made all these adjustments on the radio itself using real-time reception indicators you want to hook up to Sentinel and transfer your data card directly to your profile first thing and then save it so as to make your adjustments that you made on the radio itself permanent.
