Had the scanner out in the backyard yesterday evening, and for the first time in decades with portables, I completely forgot about it and it was left out... along with some rain that rolled through overnight. When I noticed the scanner was not in its usual cradle this morning, I had the classic slow-motion "ooooh nooo" reaction, and found it out on the patio table right where I had left it.

Popped the antenna off, had to "fling" the radio a bit to get some standing water out of the speaker baffles, and then placed the radio face down on my PC's exhaust fans to take advantage of the slightly warmer, consistent airflow. A few hours later, all was nice and dry and the SDS100 works just as it did yesterday, before it's first shower.

Shoutout to Uniden for giving the SDS100 some water resistance. I never hoped or intended to test its capability, but I'm glad it was designed with it today.

Glad to hear the good news, Uniden didn't actually deliberately start off to make a water resistant radio. In the planning stages they had to decide whether they should make a entirely new chassis or use an existing chassis from another radio.

They went with the chassis from a marine radio in the Uniden line so they were kind of stuck with the proprietary antenna mount that does not accept all SMA antennas and the antenna that comes with the radio and you can also buy the 7-800 megahertz antenna from REM made specifically for the SDS 100 have an O-ring to make it water resistant.

As it turns out it probably wasn't such a good idea because of the power requirements of the SDS 100 the initial radio was introduced with a flat back and a smaller and even weaker battery than the big butt battery it has now.

They had to spend the money to start the nip it in the bud campaign where all sds100 owners with the smaller battery and flat back were given for free the big butt battery and battery cover and got to keep the old smaller battery and flat back..

Again, good to hear it survived.
