I wonder why that is. All my other electronics can do that.
If it doesn't charge while turned on, and your radio is on all the time, it will never get a chance to charge.

So then how do you charge the battery?

Perhaps the unit comes with a spare battery (doubtful).

Guess folks will just need to put a 2nd battery on their order....

Agreed. I wonder why that limitation exists. There must be a technical reason.

If your really in a pinch, or need to take one, and the battery is drained, you may want to have one of these
nearby...

That will charge the battery while "off the grid" so-to-speak, but you still can't run it and listen to it while that is happening.

My suggestion about using both USB ports would allow hopefully enough current in at once to be able to charge & run the unit simultaneously.

it's not an issue of the connector, it a BS California environmental rule. The connector is more than capable of handling enough current to charge the batteries and power the unit.

If you need a heavy use NXDN system test, where I work we are transitioning over to it shortly. [emoji4]

Looks like a neat product, hope it works well. Hopefully I can get my hands on one when it comes out.

I'm sorry if I missed it, I was looking through the thread but couldn't find this addressed... I see it has "Location based scanning" in the notes. Since this is a portable scanner, surely this means it has built-in GPS, correct? (Would be insane to have to carry around a GPS puck, etc. around with you) If this scanner GPS built in, this would absolutely sway me to go for it.

No it does not have built-in GPS.

If you are walking far enough to need to switch systems geographically, I am impressed, indeed.

Really intended for vehicular travel, though.

The answer is two-fold. A California law made it illegal to charge unless using USB (that's effectively the just of the law as it applies).

The second part is this: You have a current limitation of 500 mA (lowest common denominator). It takes about that much to RUN the scanner. It takes about that much to CHARGE the scanner.

Why can't you run and charge at the same time? Because you can't use the same current twice. Running and charging would take about 1000 mA which would burn out the ports of USB2 supplies. Can you imagine the ensuing whining that would take place?

That said, I hope Uniden has found some way around that. It's too much to ask that CA rescind it's law, but perhaps there is another way.

So how does it accomplish "Location based scanning" or did I misread something?

Location Based Scanning is also accomplished by entering your zip code, entering your latitude and longitude, etc.

The idea here was/is to simply power the radio while out in the field, not charge
It...

That's an interesting idea. Should work provided there are not too many complaints about having to connect two cables. (thanks, California)
