Exactly. And it really cracks me up when ham guys who spend thousands upon thousands on hobby radios complain a $699 scanner is too much....seen several posts like that on here as well. A PRO-2006 was MSRP $499 in 1991!! Adjust that for inflation! Did that radio have a hard time selling? Hardly. Will this new scanner be available for less than MSRP? Yes. Will Uniden have a hard time selling them? Not at all. This will be one of the hottest sellers in a very long time.

And I've seen folks fork out 2k for a Motorola radio to set up non-affiliate scan cause they saw it on YouTube and thought it looked easy.

Only to find out that they had no idea what they got themselves into.

*sigh* Looks my post was deleted.

The limitations you speak of are on computer ports, not necessarily wall chargers. Many devices detect the available current and run the device first and will also charge it if additional current is available.

Why can't Uniden do the same?

Wouldn't USB-C solve that issue? And just for the record, I haven't bought a scanner since the 996XT but will absolutely be buying one of these.

Sitting at the Bird Cafe on Saturday, waiting for the rain to start so I could get my wet product shots (I like realism) and having some brunch, I set the SDS100 and BCD436HP to both analyze signal quality on the Northeast Tarrant County site of the Fort Worth Regional Radio System. Those of you from the area are very aware of the challenges faced trying to monitor that site on any scanner.

The pic was taken after sitting and analyzing for about 5 minutes. BCD436HP showed a signal, but never decoded a single byte. SDS100 had great decode quality with the same signal.

This is one of the number one problems people run into with the current crop of modern scanners. Simulcast. I hope this product lives up to the marketing as it will improve the scanner experience immensely!

Regarding proprietary battery packs...that's what the G4 uses, and it's pretty substantial and long-lasting. I've rarely felt like I'd be stuck without a hot spare. So as long as Uniden provides a quality battery pack, I don't see much reason for worry.

Also, I can charge the G4 via micro USB while listening, which means USB is not the limiting factor.

I also seem to recall a lot of folks on here clamoring for battery packs for their scanners a la commercial gear instead of OTC AA batteries. But regardless of how good it is or what it does, some people wouldn't be happy with it if it dispensed ice cold beer.

I tend to own radios for a long time ,..some of the biggest annoyances & concerns of a more expensive radio , is proprietary battery packs ,..they are usually around $50.00 each , can become hard to find over time & are no where near as convenient as AA cells ,..Button & case durability ,although the water resistance is a nice feature ,..I think it is far more common to encounter drops ,rather than water ,..a metal case & belt clip that can withstand drops would be more important to me than water resistance & a keypad that will not fail from wear , I mean if you drop the thing & crack the case ,..what good is the water resistance then ?

Just because the man is offering you candy doesn't mean you should get into his windowless van. A short video and an ad slick is making everyone wet their pants. We've been here before. HP-1 was touted at the best thing since sliced bread--total flop and was quickly replaced when Uniden couldn't get it to work very well.

Even the very first complaint in your assessment is completely inaccurate, and sets the tone for your entire post. The HP-1 was a very good selling scanner - far from a flop....

As a point of reference, the HomePatrol-1 has been the most successful scanner we've ever made.

As far as being "quickly replaced".... the HP-1 was released in 2009, and it's replacement - the HP-2 - was released in late 2014. 5 years is a VERY long life for a scanner in today's constantly changing and evolving RF environments.

I am looking forward to the new SDR technology being implemented in the SDS100, and will be getting one.

+1 I remember the clamoring for battery packs too.

Somethng about that analogy really disturbs me, but I can't seem to put my Ffinger on it.

HP-1 was touted at the best thing since sliced bread--total flop and was quickly replaced.

HP-1 was the best selling digital scanner in history. It was in production for over 8 years, the longest we've ever had the same digital model in production. It was replaced by the HP-2 only because of P25 Phase 2. HP-2 is still in production.

I stopped reading after the above two ridiculous statements.

Somewhere monitoring the air.
In the specs it says 8 hrs with included liion battery, are we talking aa sized li ion rechargeables or an lipo battery pack? If so whats the mah? Also will it have a drop in charger included?

FYI for anyone who might be interested, Scanner Master has added the Uniden SDS100 to their website.

They have the following statement/disclaimer posted: "Note that this item has not yet received FCC approvals and may not be offered for sale."

Here's the direct link to the Uniden SDS100 webpage at Scanner Master that includes a provision to "Sign-up to get the latest news and updates on the New SDS100": Uniden Bearcat SDS100 Police Scanner | ScannerMaster.com

I/Q Tech

Maybe already addressed but does radio have ambe vocoder? What is I/Q technology and basically how does that work? On the joking side have some folks asked for the need to wrap battery compartment in copper foil to help with UHF power cord RF!! .....laugh a little..........radio is very promising and new. Love it!

Yes, according to the manual, it does have the AMBE+2 vocoder, which I believe is required if you want to legally decode P25, DMR, NXDN etc....

As far as IQ is concerned, here's an explanation of its significance.

This would be good reading for all the whiners who don't think that LSM reception would be solved with the SDS100........actually, never mind. It won't.

As has already been posted, the exact battery specs/details have not been released yet for the SDS100. Doing a little research, however, reveals that the Uniden SDS100 has an almost identical size and form factor to the West Marine VHF470 handheld marine radio which is made by Uniden for West Marine (www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--vhf470b-floating-dsc-radio-with-gps--18736389). See the SDS100/VHF470 comparison pictures below.

Per the VHF470 owner's manual the battery for the VHF470 marine radio is listed as a 7.4 volt 1800 mAh rechargeable lithium ion battery. They do include a charging cradle with the VHF470 marine radio and list a battery charging time of approximately 5 hours with the radio turned off. Apparently you can charge the battery while the radio is turned on but the charging time will be longer per the VHF470 owner's manual: https://newcontent.westmarine.com/d...ls/ELECTRONICS/VHF470 EN OM 12222017crops.pdf

Perhaps Uniden will use the same battery to power the SDS100 scanner as is used in its cousin VHF470 marine radio? That's entirely speculation at this point as we won't know for sure until the "official" battery specs/details are released by Uniden.

As Paul has said more than once, the battery stuff is still being ironed out and nothing about it can really be taken as firm at this point.

I still can't believe that no one is addressing the elephant in the room... In Uniden's own publication, they clearly admit their are receive issues with the current product line (i.e. BCD436HP), yet this new wiz-bang scanner is suppose to solve all that; why hasn't Uniden corrected the current issues with the BCD436HP scanner? That's right, they aren't going to address it and they'll just expect consumers to buy the new one and we'll be in a similar boat when the new model comes out with flaws as well...

Both scanners at a minimal should be able to receive the same signal strength; decoding clearly is another issue, but receive sensitivity should at least be similar. Oh that's right, according to Uniden, there are non receive noise issues with the BCD436HP series scanners, that's why the foil worked, and then they added a capacitor, but yet still there are receive issues in the UHF band. I purchased a Whistler TRX-1 and side by side the UHF receive is night an day; the Uniden sits silent and the TRX-1 hears everything; just remember all the issues with the BCDx86HP's before you all run out and plunk big $$$ down on the latest and greatest Uniden scanner. And in full disclosure, I'm not a Whistler fan, rather I am a long time Uniden/Bearcat scanner user that has been grossly disappointed with the entire BCDx36HP product line and their handling of certain issues with these scanners.
